Anyone unenrolled their kids?

Ladydowntheroad · 30/12/2020 18:49

I tried to take my kids out of primary in September but let the head talk me round. December my DD caught covid from school and passed it to her sister. They were pretty sick with it and youngest still has a bad cough. We did everything we possibly could to not get it as I’m at risk. It was a fucking nightmare. I blamed myself and if it’s taught me anything I’m not taking anymore risks. Even if my kids might have immunity now I want them out.

Has anyone officially unenrolled their kids?? It’s basically a toss up between that or risking a fine but I can’t be bothered with the stresses of that and arguing with the school after the month we’ve had. I’m exhausted from this and done now. I just want my family home and safe.

How easy did you find the process of taking them out etc. Any advice appreciated. Just starting to look into it tonight.

TIA

You literally just have to write a letter to the headteacher. There are numerous templates online. Job done.

Ladydowntheroad · 30/12/2020 18:51

Is that it? Nothing more official?

Also, if anyone reads this who’s gone down this route. How are you going about keeping your kids in with the current curriculum etc. What sites etc are you using. We’ve got heaps of reading to do on this but any first-hand advice hugely appreciated!

It’s as simple as writing to the school and asking them to be taken off the role. Not always so easy to get them back on though...

I know. This is what I’m worried about. I think my eldest will be okay but my youngest is reception and I know there’s a waiting list. Damn the government for not giving us another choice.

It depends on what your plans are - long term home education, or hoping to get your children back into school, for instance in September 2021. If it's the latter then it's worth using the school's own website and other resources to gain an understanding of where your child needs to be at the end of their current academic year, and then focus your plans around that but focused on your child's interests.

So for instance, my daughter is currently obsessed with all things medical, so we are using that to extend her reading, writing, maths etc

PickAChew · 30/12/2020 19:01

What are you scared of if they've already had covid?

This is great advice. If you have the time and resources it is probably in your dc’s best interest to keep them at home. Especially as things start to calm down and more things open up again so you can include more social aspects into the curriculum.

Honestly I was all for schools staying open and kids going (first lockdown with Dd was hard work) but I’m leaning more towards keeping her home now and homeschooling. I just don’t see how the school situation is going to get any better until mass vaccinations.

There’s no guarantee that anyone who’s had it is immune. DH and I appear to have somehow dodged it. Ive been through this once now and I’m not going through it again. As I said, I’m high risk.

I don't really understand why you would remove your children from education a few weeks after they have had Covid?

The research shows that they will almost certainly have immunity now, of all children, they are probably amongst the safest now!

I don’t want to hear anymore ‘almost certainlys’ and ‘probablys’. After the past month I’m done and want to 100% know me and my family are safe. I’ve asked a specific question, if people can’t help can they move onto another thread. I’m not in the mood

When is your Reception aged child 5 years old? You could keep them off until the term after they are 5.

Ladydowntheroad · 30/12/2020 19:27

Thanks, she’s 5 in July. That’s a good idea

Why not call the school, say they're isolating for the first couple of weeks (10 days?) Due to you having symptoms

Then if schools are still open, re assess based on cases in your local area? And maybe after 1 day, your husband gets symptoms... so thats another 10 days off school. And so on.

Yoshinori · 30/12/2020 19:28

lol

NYNY211 · 30/12/2020 19:35

You may not be immune but the chances are you have built up good immunity and IF there was a 2nd time you hopefully would be fine.

CovidCarol · 30/12/2020 19:39

Sorry but unless you are going to stay inside forever with no contact from the outside world this is impossible.

This. If your kids have had it, they're fine.

How far up the immunisation priority list are you?

Ladydowntheroad · 30/12/2020 20:05

Thanks to those of you that have helped. Those keyboard warrior/scientists that haven’t feel free to go find something else to be negative about :) Unfollowing!

Homeschooling my kids isn’t an issue to me, in fact I really enjoyed it so why should I take the risk? I’ve got the time and I want to, hence why I put up this post asking for advice on how to unenroll my kids.

I’m in the first vunerable bracket, so hopefully soon.

If they’re gonna be off due to lockdown, don’t unenrolled them yet. Use the time to do your research on homeschooling first.
