Seen a few things saying that more children are spreading the virus now and schools are driving the numbers up! So is it the primary aged children or secondary schools? Just wondering if anyone here has children that have tested positive recently (probably with the new strain) and if the symptoms were more severe etc?

This gives a bit more detail about age groups of cases

I work with medics. Anecdata - my consultant colleague said the following yesterday:
“yes..the paediatric intensive care has now started to accept adult patients again..but more worryingly (not wanting to alarm you 😜) we are seeing more children now with COVID illness coming in hospital and also interestingly more with asthma exacerbations that we didnt see before..”

Tier 4 C London. The current school policy is utterly bonkers. I live in a borough where schools have been ordered to close but DS’s school in the neighborhing borough is open.

Caught Covid from DSS (16) London secondary school.

Last week there were 3 paediatric patients covid + in my nhs trust. All with underlying disorders.

GleamingBaubles · 30/12/2020 22:30

Which trust is that? Or where roughly?

Porcupineintherough · 30/12/2020 22:32

Well we've just had it. Ds1 15 caught it at school and passed it to me 49.

Pomegranatespompom · 30/12/2020 22:38

London - none in itu. We’re seeing low numbers of positive children on routine screening plus low numbers of children requiring intervention- hope it continues.

anomum123 · 30/12/2020 22:38

We had it mid-Dec, 8yr old daughter (minor symptoms, tired, sore back/head for a few days). Both myself and my DH caught it from her. 3 other girls from her class also caught - similar symptoms.

Children had little social exposure from March to September, so were prone to the fresher's flu phase in the autumn. Other demographics were suppressed in the November lockdown but school ages were supressed less through continuing with school.
Children continue to be low risk for complications, and there's been various phases of different demographics having a higher previlence than others. There are plenty of circumstantial reasons that aren't necessarily the sign of alarming trends.

You can go to this website and see.
coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/cases
Click where it says United Kingdom and change it to Local Authorities and your local area. Scroll down to the brightly coloured heat map. On the right hand side, click on the different age groups.

Eg in Croydon, the rolling rate for age 5-9 is 336. 10-14 is 562. 15-19 is 694.
The worst age groups are people in their 20s and then 30s, but still. 336/100,000 for primary schools kids is frightening. And that’s mostly just the ones that had enough symptoms to get tested.

The main risk with children is still that they take it home and give it to their relatives.
