1.5% of people here have a current positive test

Our current rate is more than 1500 cases per 100,000 = 1.5%. This is only those who have a positive test, if up to 80% of cases are asymptomatic, the actual rate for cases is much higher.

We've had a few weeks where infection rates have been rising sharply towards this number.

Surely at this rate and including all the earlier cases, we must soon be approaching the fabled herd immunity?

I would have thought so. But no doubt someone will be along to tell us it won’t work.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 29/12/2020 17:35

I was wondering about this. That's only people that have been tested as well. There must be thousands more asymptomatic, maybe millions. Is there a recent estimate as to how many people have had it?

My MIL thinks she’s had covid, didn’t tell anyone or go for a test. But had the symptoms. She’s not recorded in the numbers. Must be 1000’s like her about.

It looks as though the immunity may not be long lasting. Herd immunity usually built up by vaccination anyway, not by community infections. Vaccines looking hopeful though.

About 20% of people who catch COVID-19 are fully asymptomatic (i.e. they never experience symptoms at all).

it would be lovely if herd immunity did work - but we just don't know with this disease. We are so fortunate to have hope with vaccines from the amazing scientists.

hang in there. Unless you are a denier or an unnecessary socialiser/shopper, in which case thanks for nothing.
