@pusscatsinblankets

I can't give exact data as this can easily be linked to the hospital I work at and obviously I need to be careful with information I share. They hold regular meetings with the health officials in the LA and regularly share this sort of data which is made public. Once I come across it being made public I can certainly point you in the right direction. I think the fact that London has seen a 200% increase in covid admissions overall since early Dec is extremely alarming. I haven't seen a breakdown in terms of ages for this data but I suspect this to be a high number of children too given what we are seeing in our trust. I suspect this number will be easily available somewhere.

And yes, a high number of those vulnerable and CEV. There are children with other underlying conditions which are not included on any of the lists gov/NHS have produced which is worrying. Obviously this needs looking at more closely to see if there is a link between the two. Non-vulnerable children numbers we have also seen a significant increase in too in comparison to pre-dec and certainly much higher than March time. Discussions that are taking place are linking this increase to the new variant.

@ht21

"I didn't think schools had been allowed to make decisions like this?"

Our school is independent so I'm guessing they had the choice. I did read about the Greenwich schools not being allowed to,

It was all schools in England, not sure about the rest of the UK.
quirkyquails · 29/12/2020 19:58

^ All state schools

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 29/12/2020 20:31

Where I am people are not abiding by the rules, they are mixing as normal. Next door neighbour has extended family around every day, my friend has sent kids to in laws for a few days, people walking past in large groups, my own sister has family and friends around all the time, surely it's the same everywhere. Until people take this seriously and stop being selfish we are all in trouble.

sortmylifeoutplease · 30/12/2020 08:27

If they are insisting on keeping primaries open, could it at least be on a rota basis.

Hippywannabe · 30/12/2020 08:38

I would be happy to go back next week providing it is safe for me to do so. However, I will be closely exposed to children who have been on holiday despite being told to isolate and those whose families have not stuck to the mixing rules at all.
The majority of 'my' parents are lovely, intelligent people who are raising lovely, honest children. Those children tell us of who has been to their house and to whose houses they have been.
I am going to find it hard next week to hear about their Xmases whilst having had to isolate myself and not see my family as we then missed the days to mix households.

Matt hancock is saying this new virus is causing problems re school.

PandemicPavolova · 30/12/2020 08:44

Hippy in our school it was the teacher who was asking pupils where they had been when we had 2 weeks isolation and they were coming out with all sorts. She seemed to be encouraging it and it was awful because I and others had not been out. Then our children are saying... But mummy x went it the play ground why can't I. ''

His just said that but it's not up to him to close the schools. The lady presenter is challenging him on being too slow to act but it's all falling on deaf ears I fear. Schools are not safe but seems you've got to wait for the education secretary to get his act together

Where are you seeing this? Thanks
Barbie222 · 30/12/2020 09:00

I really doubt Matt would be given anything to say about schools. I think the leak in the tes was on the money and there will be more disruption to secondaries imminently. Primaries will be left to collapse, I give them a week! - it achieves the same end without being the governments "fault". If your school closes as there are no staff, it's harder to make a fuss. It will mean no key worker provision though so bad for your local area.

You could explain why you don't do playgrounds to your daughter? I think the last thing we want to be doing at the moment is discouraging children from talking about their home experience, because it makes you slightly uncomfortable. Trust me, there are really good reasons teachers have these kinds of chats, and they really need to keep going with them at the moment.
the80sweregreat · 30/12/2020 09:06

I was watching Matt Hancock on ITV news this morning and school's were mentioned
He said ' the new mutant strain is causing more problems for children'
He was pushed on a national lockdown etc but couldn't say anything else. Just that the tiers will change today etc.
To be fair, schools are not his department.
The presenters did say to him that any announcements are slow , but he didn't agree.
It was more about the new Oxford vaccine.

Xenia · 30/12/2020 10:50

I think we do more damage by shutting schools than not but I know the nation is divided on the issue as I am sure are both the Labour and Tory parties on the issue never mind the cabinet (and indeed some doctors - my NHS doctor sibling thinks as I do that we have sacrificed the young for the old in all this and made the wrong decisions)

Witchend · 30/12/2020 11:55

Just to put some context Xenia above posted a couple of days ago that she thinks that the world is overpopulated and it would be a good idea if 16 million people died.
I presume she is assuming she, nor her family, wouldn't be one of those 16 millions.

noblegiraffe · 30/12/2020 11:57

Someone with zero credibility making a poor appeal to authority.

BiggerBoat1 · 30/12/2020 12:00

It is crazy. All schools should be off for at least 3-4 weeks. Knowing this Government they will make some half thought out announcement at the 11th hour. We need to protect children, their families and the staff in schools.

Xenia · 30/12/2020 15:24

I have said since March I don't mind if I increase my risk of death and that of my children by 10x as long as the mandatory measures are removed. It may not be the view of most people but luckily we are in a country still free enough to express that view.

I would certainly prefer a UK with the numbers we had when I was born but I do not want to start deliberately killing people off of course. 600,000 die a year in the UK in a normal year. There is nothing necessarily morally wrong with a declining population in particular countries. Indeed int he UK there were huge wage rises after the Black Death, not that I would wish the black death on anyone.

PandemicPavolova · 30/12/2020 15:29

Barbie,

I absolutely explained to dd why we didn't go out, she was confused because she knew when we are self isolating we don't go out.

Hence her confusion... But why is x y and z going out? And more than that it was the teacher encouraging it... Go out, get fresh air, it's vital to get out Confused which in my view is not an appropriate conversation to self isolating children, at, all.

CovidCarol · 30/12/2020 15:40

StrangeAddiction · 30/12/2020 15:54

@Xenia have you asked your children if they mind you increasing their (and their dm's!) risk of death?!

I'm sorry but I just can't understand how you can say that. My children would "probably" be fine but I don't want to find out whether they were one of the unlucky ones and if that means restrictions for everyone for the sake of everyone for a while then so be it!

WankPuffins · 30/12/2020 15:57

@Xenia I've been on MN a LONG time and seen you drop some clangers over the years. But fuck me, that's cold, even for you.

You genuinely wouldn't mind increasing the risk of your children dying so things can get back to normal?

By 10 times no less 😆
