MPs vs Teachers/school staff

I can't believe that this is the case. Hundreds and thousands of school staff and pupils are set to return to poorly ventilated rooms, in close proximity with a virus that's main spreaders are children when MPs have been allowed to work from home including reasons of not feeling it is appropriate to travel with concerns for the virus...
I can't be the only one that is angered by this!

Isn’t that just reflective of society at the moment though? Think of yourself only and throw other people under the bus.

Lumene · 29/12/2020 10:56

It sounds like even some MPs are angered by this from the quote!

ChablisandCrisps · 29/12/2020 10:57

I am not saying schools staying open is a good or a bad thing, but millions of people are in key worker roles that simply could not work if schools and nurseries don't stay open. Doctors, nurses, prison officers etc don't have the option to work from home so I think this is a big factor in the decision making.

Lucyandbet · 29/12/2020 10:57

I thought secondary schools were also returning later than originally planned on or after the 11th in England and even later in Scotland and Wales.

NYNY211 · 29/12/2020 10:58

@ChablisandCrisps I’m assuming teachers mean shut the schools and go back to the hubs like we had before for key workers.

SquishySquirmy · 29/12/2020 11:05

But MPs going back (and travelling great distances to do so) wouldn't make schools any safer.

Same as an office worker working from home doesn't negatively impact on a supermarket worker who can't work from home (although it feels unfair).

justchecking1 · 29/12/2020 11:07

I'm in Wales. The plan so far is to return on the 6th

SantaAssociationRepresentitve · 29/12/2020 11:13

One rule for them and another rule for everyone else.

pusscatsinblankets · 29/12/2020 12:39

It's always going to be / feel unfair, but it makes sense. They are adversing that everyone that can work from home, should work from home. MPs will be spread all over the country so have to travel back to London.
I'm a community AHP carrying daily face to face with clients, some of who are covid +ve. But, just because I have to do that, doesn't mean I want people who can avoid the risks to do so. Why would I?!

lonelyplanet · 29/12/2020 12:45

Completey unacceptable. They should be doing their jobs. Parents and schools are waiting to find out how families and children are going to be protected through this worsening crisis. They need answers now, in order to prepare for next week's school return. However the government is extending their own holiday to keep themselves safe.

noblegiraffe · 29/12/2020 12:48

All teachers are back next week in England. All primary kids are in, and a lot of secondary kids will be in (Y11,13 plus vulnerable and keyworkers), with the rest being taught remotely.

If MPs are off, then I suggest that they get into their local school to help with the mass testing that they keep suggesting is feasible.

manicinsomniac · 29/12/2020 12:50

But if they can work from home then they should. Same as anybody. I think it's irrelevant to the school debate.

noblegiraffe · 29/12/2020 12:51

They were already working from home and able to vote remotely. This is an extra week of holiday.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/12/2020 12:54

Well technically teachers could work from home if the pupils are also at home, and teach remotely, with the pupils using the laptops provided by the Government!

squiddybear · 29/12/2020 12:55

We are at crisis point with schools we are due back next week and they decide now is a good time to take a holiday!
Give schools the answers and resources they need then go!

OP posts:
ineedaholidaynow · 29/12/2020 13:01

But they have given us 1,500 military personnel to help with the testing. Split between about 3,000 schools and 3 million students, I am sure that will work well!

squiddybear · 29/12/2020 13:01

@ineedaholidaynow let's not forget the only support we get is over the phone and online. What could possible possibly go wrong

OP posts:
cardibach · 29/12/2020 13:23

We need to stop talking about schools being open or closed and start talking about in person, blended or online opening. It might get people to see that we aren’t asking not to work, just to work safely.
