How does isolating work in this situation?

Firstly this is not my family thankfully.

Family of 4, dad tests positive, three days later child age 9 tests positive then mum three days after. One child age 13 has no symptoms.

How long do the family have to isolate in total. I've read that after 10 days following dad's positive, the 13 year old no longer has to isolate as long as he doesn't have symptoms. It's all so confusing for them and they want to get it right.

I’m shocked but gov website says

If other household members develop symptoms during this period, you do not need to isolate for longer than 10 days
www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-households-with-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection

Maybe I’m reading it wrong?!

As each person gets symptoms they start their own 10 day isolation. If anyone doesn't get symptoms by the time the first 10 day isolation is over then they can stop isolating

Thanks, so it is right but does seem bizarre to me that they only isolate for the initial 10 days.

That does seem odd. Child 2 could catch it from Dad on day 13, say, but they don't have to isolate. I guess the logic is if they haven't caught it by then they never will.

I assume the logic of that chart is based on each person in the household isolating from all other members of the family too. In real life, that is not practical, particularly with younger children. So child 2 only isolates for 10 days if, and only if, they have had no contact with any other member of the household in that 10 day period. However, if they have been in contact with the sibling and the mother, their isolation period would start again on the last day they were in contact with each of them.

The logic is that isolation means isolation from other family members too.

Yes, I was surprised that symptom free DS1 was required back at work on day 11 when DS2 was only 2 days into his symptoms, but that does appear to be the rule and it worked out OK for us. Ds1 never did get symptoms.
