Can I drive DD back to uni, and stay in a hotel overnight? It's 350 miles each way which I can't face in one day as I have arthritis. We are in T4, uni is in T3.

@Janaih

The guidance says avoid public transport if at all possible! Sheesh.
A one way journey by public transport or two plus motorway service stops plus an overnight hotel - train is far less risky. Sheesh. Hmm

Tier4 in England advice here on public transport.

I don't see the words "avoid if at all possible" on that page. Do they appear on Welsh/Scottish versions?

I don't think OP wants to sleep in the car... or a tent. The buses & trains are running so people can actually use them, not just to keep the engines greased.

tbf, I could be wrong because that page is all of 8 days old now. That's ancient in terms of covid policy/rules.

You’re allowed to travel for education purposes !
Op don’t worry it’ll be fine and hotels are available for exemption reasons (key workers, education etc)

Madcats · 27/12/2020 22:17

I would double double check with your child's tutors/lecturers . A lot have no plans to teach face to face for the next couple of months (but I know quite a few arty courses hope to).

I am. The guidance for students is that they travel back, mostly using public transport, over a specific five week period.

SarahMused · 28/12/2020 08:16

There is an exception in the law for students to travel home for xmas vacation and back again before 8th Feb. A lot won’t be able to carry everything on public transport and will need assistance, so you can give them a lift. If the journey is too long it is surely safer to break the journey than to risk having an accident? The idea is to minimise risk and if you can find an hotel I would definitely stay and drive back fresh in the morning. Remember the guidance is not the same as the law and you can do what you think is sensible within the law with a clear conscience. This is the part of the law that applies to students.

Tier 3 hotels are either closed, or can only book in people travelling for work purposes, so no, you can’t stay overnight. You’re coming from a Tier 4 area as well, so you have to follow the rules of that area, even in an area in a different Tier, which again doesn’t allow overnight stats.
