Mum, Covid and lung cancer

Tubbytenbums · 27/12/2020 10:19

My mum has leukaemia, lung cancer and COPD and fortunately survived covid in September. However, my brother has just had a positive test, my mum was with him on Xmas day. Does anyone know if her antibodies can protect her particularly if my brother's strain is different? Thanks in advance

No one can say for sure but there is a good chance she still has antibodies from September. And even if she doesnt, she will have some T cell protection which may mean that a second bout would be mild. I've just had COVID for the second time and this time was very mild even though my antibodies disappeared during the summer.

Yes she might get it again but very likely more mildly and short-lived. They reckon antibodies last at max strength for 6 months though so she might well escape another bout altogether.

@porcupineintherough, hopefully you're right, thanks for answering.
I'm just worried as my mum takes imatinib for the leukaemia which impacts her immune system

@Tubbytenbums in that case, it might be worth your dm contacting her consultant tomorrow for advice. There are some trials now of prophylactic treatments that may be available/suitable for her.

There have been 5 people out of 40million who have been infected twice. There have been thousands of different strains identified. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Porcupineintherough · 27/12/2020 13:32

@epythymy sorry but that is simply not true, you are way, way behind the times. There are hundreds in the uk alone. Nobody has sequenced the viral genome of our infections sure, but when was the last time you heard if that being done for anyone ?
