I'm just interested to know how many people actually do this and how they find it .

In the summer I wore one continuously for several hours while travelling and it was pretty grim . How public facing workers and secondary school staff/pupils would, and do ,cope I don't know .

I sometimes do in my secondary non-teaching but students facing job. It's fine. Might go to loo and take it off for a couple of minutes. It takes very little time to get used to.

Nonochair · 26/12/2020 15:27

Yes. 8 hours at work with half hour break for lunch.
Talking and active most of that time.
For the first week I found it tough-very tiring and drying of throat and eyes but have got used to it now really.
Still struggle to hear as well when wearing one for some reason even if the speaker isn’t wearing a mask.

KnowingMeKnowingYule · 26/12/2020 15:30

Yes I do but have a break after each hour and a half. It's annoying but I'd rather that than not wear it.

Ilikewinter · 26/12/2020 15:30

Yes, i work in retail and have to wear it for my full shift, 7.5hrs.
Its harder in the hot weather but not too bad now, been wearing them for soooo long i think ive just got used to it.

muddledmidget · 26/12/2020 15:31

12 hours at a time, only taking it off for a lunch break. Surgical style are fine, not too uncomfortable but I have got quite spotty around my chin. Also I now carry 2 pairs of glasses, indoors and outdoors, as the temperature change causes them to steam up when I first arrive at work. Also recognising that sometimes the mask just isn't right, and changing it rather than persevering with an uncomfortable one. Sometimes you're just aware of them, I don't know why, but that can normally be resolved with a new one (not rationed at my work!)

QuantumJump · 26/12/2020 15:32

I wear one to teach (not in a school - I'm a uni lecturer) and I absolutely hate it. The students can't hear me properly, I can't hear them when they ask questions, and if I talk for a few minutes without stopping I get a bit breathless (I'm not asthmatic or anything btw). I don't mind at all wearing one to pop to the shops, but lecturing in one is awful.

frosted232 · 26/12/2020 15:32

Yes, 12 hour shifts and we have to wear them on the shop floor but can take them off in staff only areas. Lots of people have been complaining of headaches (myself included) and it's resulted in a very clean warehouse because everyone is out there cleaning and sorting to have time out from the mask.

marvelousmadmadammim · 26/12/2020 15:33

Normal coverings and surgical masks fine

Ffp3 horrible for any length of time

peridito · 26/12/2020 15:38

I really take my hat off to those wearing them for hours .

People do say you get used to it .I found the glasses steaming up and the fact that the mask got so wet really difficult .

I'm just thinking about compliance by secondary school age pupils .

rumerhasit · 26/12/2020 15:38

Yes...all day at work except on break. So that's 8 hours. Along with safety glasses...

DollyMixtureLulus · 26/12/2020 15:39

Teacher. Mostly fine, although sometimes by a Thurs/Fri I do feel as though I'm masked out.

Teacher, and hating it. I'm totally deaf with a mask on for some reason. Can't hear a thing being said to me. I have a strained throat from trying to project my voice through it and nose bleeds from everything drying out. Getting spotty round my chin, too. Hating every damned second of it. Can't shop either - glasses wearer and fed up of misting up, overheating and struggling to breathe adequately through it.

SpringerJS · 26/12/2020 15:45

Yes, all day in a school except for the odd v short break. I don’t like it - hard to communicate adequately with children (so much of human communication is body language and facial expression) and I’ve developed acne on my cheeks where the masks sit. I have family abroad where the children are in masks all day at school. They comply of course, but they really don’t like wearing them and their parents have noticed a change in their social interactions - it’s sad.

Agreed
Honeyroar · 26/12/2020 15:45

Yes, I worked in a café, so had them on all day. I got used to it. When it was really busy and I was running around a lot it was hard. They definitely need changing every few hours or get wet.

AllDoneIn · 26/12/2020 15:46

Secondary school teacher. Take it off for 20 mins at lunch wear it all day teaching. I'm at the stage where I just roll my eyes when people bleat about wearing them.

If we had them in secondary classrooms we probably wouldn't be facing school closures in January. Teens are perfectly capable of wearing them bar a handful of genuine exemptions - rather than covidiots and pearl clutchers with their 'Won't someone think of the chiiiiiildren!' The very same thing they screech when there's talk of closing schools.

We're in the middle of a fucking pandemic. I'm out of patience for magical thinking. Let's try actually following the science for a change with mask wearing and ventilation. If three year olds in Singapore can manage, I'm sure most 15 year olds can.

HopeAndDriftWood · 26/12/2020 15:47

Yep, eight hour work days and then four 10 hour plus stints.

You get through it if you have to, because there’s no alternative. A mask to change into every three hours or so makes a lot of difference to how “fresh” it feels... otherwise, it just becomes the norm.

AnyFucker · 26/12/2020 15:47

Yes. An FFP3 mask. If you only wear a thin "surgical" one that actually lets a relatively large amount of fresh air to circulate you have no idea how bad that is.

TheDrsDocMartens · 26/12/2020 15:47

Yes. Found I get thirsty but otherwise fine

AllDoneIn · 26/12/2020 15:49

And yes they absolutely need to be changed. I get through three a day in school. They become soggy and useless unless changed.

KnowingMeKnowingYule · 26/12/2020 15:50

Hear hear!!!
sunshineandhappy · 26/12/2020 15:50

All day, with a break for lunch, non patient facing nhs. You get used to it but definitely get more thirsty.

Tearsfortiers · 26/12/2020 15:52

Yes, I work in a school and wear one all day. It's fine, you get used to it. I do find that since wearing a mask that I get a sore throat on the days I work though

WomenAndVulvas · 26/12/2020 15:53

6 hours a day with very short breaks in between. I do a lot of talking at work but it's a very quiet office so I haven't had any trouble with clients not hearing me.
I've got used to it, it annoys me sometimes but I mostly don't notice it much anymore.
