Four children have cold (but potential COVID?) symptoms, should I be worried?

All four have runny noses, one intermittently has a blocked nose, another has a sore throat, otherwise feel fine. Even though it’s pretty typical of them to feel like this during winter (down to the fact that DD2 is always the one with a sore throat and DS the one with a blocked nose).

I’m still concerned because my elderly mother is in our bubble, and has been seeing us. She’s not concerned about catching COVID but I’m terrified that she will. Do you think it’s likely to be COVID?

Have you taken their temperature?

YabbaDabbaDooDah · 26/12/2020 12:20

@ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas

Yes, all taken, and all normal.

Have you done a test? That would be the next logical step.

YabbaDabbaDooDah · 26/12/2020 12:23

@ChristmasinJune

It would be, but since they don’t have any of the symptoms I can’t get an NHS test and I unfortunately don’t have ~£600 to spend on private tests.

Isolate and test. If you can get a test today you will probably know one way or the other tomorrow, or Monday latest.
Worrying about what ifs is awful, so find out for sure asap

Cuddling57 · 26/12/2020 12:33

Your mum should stay away as much as possible as even if it's just a cold she probably doesn't want to catch that.
I'd be inclined to get a test. Are you in tier 4? We have been given the go ahead to get community testing here. Also requested to from school for the whole family too.

Go on the website, when it asks you if they have symptoms tick yes then get an appointment. Nobody's checking and if you feel you have valid concerns in my opinion that's good enough.

satnighttakeaway · 26/12/2020 12:49

No one can tell you how likely it is, you must know by now that the only way to tell is to get a test.

As I understand it there's no shortage of tests and no one checks if you say you have symptoms, it's in everyone's interest to identify as many cases as possible.

Local anecdata is that the wait time for results as longer than normal atm, Christmas effect I guess

YabbaDabbaDooDah · 26/12/2020 12:52

@ChristmasinJune @satnighttakeaway

I’ll get the tests then, thank you!

Fingers crossed for you then Smile

I have all those symptoms and no temperature. I am positive and feel awful. Just get them tested please xx

Quarantino · 26/12/2020 19:35

I recommend the Zoe app. I'm often invited to test with symptoms that aren't the "official" 3.

Porcupineintherough · 26/12/2020 19:35

I dont know about likely, but it's certainly possible. I caught it from ds1 last week and he presented with not-very-serious cold symptoms.

Iamsodonewith2020 · 26/12/2020 21:35

Quarantino that’s how I ended up testing

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 26/12/2020 21:37

My son had sneezing and runny nose but no fever. He was positive too.

Notnowokay · 26/12/2020 21:39

Check your local authority website, our one is doing community testing that I would not have known about without seeing it online.

TheoriginalLEM · 26/12/2020 21:48

This is why the government need to extend the list of symptoms.

My line manager was in work for three days with "cold" symptoms. 10 of us now with covid infection because she didn't have a cough Hmm not her fault, she was following guidelines. The fault lies with management that didnt close the workplace because we had "full PPE" non medical paper masks and stupid aprons ive been really ill, as has my DP

Frigglet · 26/12/2020 21:50

I’d suggest you get them tested. Sounds exactly how my children were on Christmas Eve. Went online to book tests. Tested at local centre yesterday morning and results through before I woke up this morning so not necessarily longer waits for results. Btw they Tested Positive.

PandemicPavolova · 26/12/2020 21:53

Will you let us know op, I've also got dc with very mild cold symptoms!

Iamsodonewith2020 · 26/12/2020 22:02

Theoriginal that’s exactly how 7 staff members have it in our school ( inc me) . One child with a cold which parents said was “just a cold” because she has no cough. She has tested positive. We have all been dropping like flies the past 3 days. 5 of us are feeling very unwell inc one teacher who is 64.

twinklespells · 26/12/2020 22:11

We're tier 4 and I lied about symptoms to get tests for me and DD today. DH had a cold then DD got it and then I did. A family member has recently tested positive and they had none of the three symptoms just felt achy and had a runny nose and usual cold symptoms. Based on that I decided to get us tested, as we are in a support bubble and I don't want to infect anyone else if it's covid and we will therefore keep our distance for a while. Lots of testing capacity here so I don't think it was wrong to do. It seems a lot of people may have covid without the standard symptoms listed.
