Cried today while social distancing

We normally see family about every 2-3 months. The last time we saw SIL was last Xmas. We were due to see them in Feb but postponed due to Covid worries, not realising things would get worse not better.

Today they dropped by to exchange gifts, we had to socially distance because we aren’t their bubble (they were on their way to see BIL’s family). We stood on the doorstep and cried. Just wanted to hug them, especially when my little nephew produced a special gift for my DC and said how much he loved and missed us.

Just so sick of this bloody virus with no end in sight. Praying to be vaccinated soon.

I do think virtual is not being harnessed enough, including myself. We need to learn to have good long video chats with a cup of tea

Au contraire. I’m on it all the time for work and I am starting to see how interacting in this way is taking so much out of me and impacting my mental health significantly.

We are humans, not holograms. We need physical interaction with our loved ones. What we are doing now is an unprecedented experiment and am very worried about the impacts of it long term, particularly on young children.

Also the plan is to not vaccine the under 16s at the moment, my pre schoolers are going to suffer more not being allowed to play normally with other kids than should they catch covid. We are allowing them to play normal and have since the end of the first lockdown. However, because we’ve made this decision we haven’t seen other people inside and don’t go to pubs etc

One to one virtual chats with a cup of tea can be quite nice. It's the big groups that don't work well virtually in my experience, you never know when to talk.

Yummymummy2020 · 26/12/2020 09:09

We are the same, our little one is nearly one but we made the decision for all of us to distance as I am pregnant with a heart condition and then complications of pregnancy, it’s so so tough isn’t it. I had a few wobbles yesterday as I hadn’t seen my grand parents in months and just wanted a hug!

FedUpOfAllThis · 26/12/2020 09:09

I’m sure one hug wouldn’t have made a difference. I hadn’t hugged my parents for 9 months but I gave them a bloody big hug yesterday. Call me irresponsible if you like but I stood at the window of my Nan and grandad’s house with my kids. I didn’t see extended family and I won’t be doing.

Yummymummy2020 · 26/12/2020 09:23

@FedUpOfAllThis I don’t think standing at a window is irresponsible at all, and I also wouldn’t judge others for their choices during this but it would have been irresponsible of me if I hugged them as I have had a lot of hospital appointments myself where it’s possible to catch it and then also they have carers going in too so either side could have infected the other with both sides high risk so it made more sense to dodge the hugs for us! I felt it was safe to do a garden visit at a distance though for everyone!

Had a lovely day yesterday but feeling really low this morning as who knows when I will be able to see my again

@Melonlover80 oh piss off. My dc are 8 and 11 and I am not anxious or scared. But yet a lack of contact with children their own age for months in end did have an impact.

We always have a quiet Christmas because my dd has ASD, so our Christmas was not much different from normal.

This is not a competition just because your dc are fine with being away from other children for months at a time and not hugging their grandparents for a year. But that doesn't mean other dc are, and that is OK.

My children have been back for months (8 and 10). Did yours not go back?

Melonlover80 · 26/12/2020 17:03

And I promise I didn’t mean to see it as a competition
But as a single parent - I don’t have the... “luxury” of breaking down crying about covid and I honestly believe that young children should really have very little clue about the situation. Their heads should be full of sport, playing, treats, pets, fav books, films... whatever. But not a pandemic. And if that means my opinion is somehow point scoring, then perhaps I am point scoring!
