Last week, before we found out we were tier 4, I booked a visit to a National Trust property just over an hour's drive away for between Xmas and New Year. It'll be DH's birthday and, as our original plans had already been scrapped, wanted to go somewhere different from the usual more local places for a winter walk.

We're now Tier 4, as is the place we've booked. Should we still go? I've tried searching rules and it just says you shouldn't travel outside tier 4. I know you can go out for exercise as much as you like but doesn't stipulate a distance.

It's a vast property with just toilets & cafe open for takeaway. It'll be just our household, we will travel by car and, from previous experience, the NT are very hot on Covid procedures, hence the need to book to limit numbers.

We'll be home all week with just walks to local open spaces (which will be heaving no doubt) so can't see the harm in our plans but also don't want to be a rule breaker. Any thoughts?
Thanks.

I love the stay in your village, town etc comments, what if your village is a mile long?! Go OP, it’s outside it’ll be a very minute risk. In answer to this will never be over if people don’t stay home, no it won’t until a vast number of vulnerable people have had the vaccine, I doubt being outside socially distanced has any bearing on it. NT are great for covid assessing risks.

NT have lost so much money this year. If you're lucky enough to book a ticket, go and enjoy. And purchase some takeaway refreshments.
I think the guidance says to wear a hair shirt if you have one, otherwise don't sweat it.

@thewinehasgonetomyhead - has the wine gone to your head? There are several legal exceptions to staying inside your home. How would anyone buy food or attend a medical appointment otherwise? Good grief.

Stellaris22 · 24/12/2020 19:39

FFS. Does it need to be law to not do something stupid?

OP isn't breaking the law, no. But certainly not helping.

Be responsible.

Yes, this is precisely my point. "Several legal reasons", is visiting a National Trust one of these legal reasons? I don't remember seeing that one.

Several legal exceptions rather.

I have tickets to a light show on New Year’s Day. I was expecting it to be cancelled as we (and it) are going into tier 4 on Boxing Day. I had an email today telling me it’s on but you are now only allowed to go if you’re tier 4!

Not specifically, no. But since the NT place the OP is talking about is in tier 4, and it sounds like it’s staying open, then I think it’s clear it’s legal to go there. The law doesn’t allow places to stay open to visitors but then also make it illegal for any visitors to actually go. You can go if your purpose is one of the exceptions listed, in this case it would fall under exercise. You can’t go if your purpose is not a legal exception, eg meeting a group of friends.

Yes, visiting a public outdoor place, including public gardens, is one of those reasons

WeatherwaxOn · 26/12/2020 21:22

The attraction we have tickets to is T4, so are we. It's a 10 minute drive away. Visitor numbers are strictly limited and its all outdoors. I can't see any risks involved.
Venue has confirmed the event will be going ahead.

Certainly lower risk than DCs being at school, or my friend being at midnight mass.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/12/2020 21:29

I can't believe people still need to ask these questions. Honestly think its faux ignorance.
Strange how everyone looking for justification to travel to a different area says where they live will be packed with people, but they place the have been/are going will be nice a quiet 🙄.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/12/2020 21:30

But I can honestly say I really wouldn't care if people were traveling to other places, but thus constant asking if its allowed when its quite obviously not is mind numbing.
