Only two of us on Christmas Day - what games can we play?

It's just going to be DD and me tomorrow. We have piles of presents to open (well she has) and a family zoom booked plus lots of fabulous food and drink.

But we are usually 16 on Christmas Day and play a lot of games - it's always great fun. My DS for reasons fathomable only to him has opted to be with his father and we are pretty hurt and bruised about that. He's not responded to invites even to get his presents. We might go on a walk in the afternoon. And will definitely be watching movies but that's what we do every night.

Any thoughts on games we can play? What are you going to do to have fun?

Oh by the way DD is 20 and will be helping me polish off a good amount of champagne.

We’ve always played Tumbling Monkeys. Any game involving physical dexterity and alcohol is usually a thing here.

AdaColeman · 24/12/2020 09:01

Chess, draughts, dominoes, backgammon?
Card games eg Gin Rummy, Old Maid, Slap Jack etc etc
If you've got the space, do a jigsaw together?

Have a super Christmas Day! 🎄 🍾 🥂 🎄 🥳 🎄

DH and I have got into two player games this year. Our favourites are Ticket to Ride, Jaipur, Carcassone and Pandemic (!). Loads of other good ones though. Sounds like you've got a lovely Christmas Day planned.

EugenesAxe · 24/12/2020 09:17

Yeah definitely get a jigsaw out. Consequences or exquisite corpse? You know, when you fold over the paper and swap each time. For former we do boy/ girl/ where they met/ he was wearing/ she was wearing/ he said/ she said/ consequence.

You could just quiz each other on Trivial Pursuit cards.

Boggle, Sushi Go Party, Qwirkle, spite & malice, Pass the Pigs, Bird Tree Flower - where you have 7-8 categories and generate a random letter for which you have to think of something for every category. Scoring for that one is 5 if both have it, 10 if unique and 10 bonus for finishing first (correctly). No points if you end it and you have a dodgy answer.

AdaColeman · 24/12/2020 10:11

How could I forget Scrabble!
Have you still got any of the board games from when the children were young?

endingintiers · 24/12/2020 11:33

Monopoly Deal card game, quick and addictive.

I've bought Ticket to Ride this year as I've played it two player before and really enjoyed it.

Bouledeneige · 24/12/2020 12:42

I haven't got all these games but I have a couple. We regularly play racing demons and sequence but I can also get out the othello and mastermind. I have a wooden box containing a two sort of snooker games which belonged to my grandparents and is 100 years older so I will get that out too.

That said DD might nit be in the mood....

Maybe just sit and watch a couple of films together or something?

lifestooshort123 · 24/12/2020 14:35

I'd take your lead from her - play dead lions on the sofa with chocs and a good film?

EsmesRedPetticoat · 24/12/2020 14:48

We are planning a hearty few rounds of Crib. It’s my 9 year olds favourite game at the minute!

annevonkleve · 24/12/2020 16:11

OMG being made to do a jigsaw on Christmas Day might just finish me off. That is the epitome of depressing for me (after watching such "delights" as Call the Midwife).

But if it floats your boat OP...we like Coppit if you have that.

If it's good weather go out for a long walk and get some vitamin D.

MsSquiz · 24/12/2020 16:17

Scattergories - you don't need the actual game, just pick a list of topics (girls name, animal, colour, clothing, film title, etc) and the choose a letter from the alphabet. You get 2 points for an original answer, 1 point if you both have the same.

Heads up - a iPhone app. It has lots of free catetgories, as well as some to buy. Definitely gets better the drunker you are. My DM and I used to end up ugly laughing and crying with laughter playing this together

YogaLite · 24/12/2020 16:24

Online Scrabble?

U can also download Ticket to ride.

delilahbucket · 24/12/2020 16:27

Draw Something app is always a winner here. Even more fun with drinks 😂

JanewaysBun · 24/12/2020 16:29

@Mssquiz I LOVE Scattergories!!

If you have a scramble set you can play bananagrams (Google online for details but basically a more fun version of scrabble)

Bayleaf25 · 24/12/2020 16:37

Hangman/ Christmas Hangman

Pipandmum · 24/12/2020 16:42

We will definitely be playing Scrabble. Maybe cluedo. Just me and my teens.

tootyfruitypickle · 24/12/2020 21:04

Battleships app is fun
