I can’t believe people

Like many people I was at the market today because I needed things for Christmas dinner. I had done an online shop, but lots of items were missing, so to the store I went. I ran into a family member who tested positive for Covid a couple of days ago. I know he tested positive because he bowed out of the extended family celebration (that I already wasn’t attending because it’s not within the rules and not remotely a good idea). Anyone in our family would have been happy to do his shopping and leave or at his door. The thing that is upsetting me the most is he probably wasn’t the only person there who was supposed to be isolating. How do we save lives if people who are knowingly, actively contagious won’t stay home?

He probably was just using it as an excuse to bow out of the family gathering and isn't positive.

My first thought too

And mine!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 23/12/2020 21:25

Busted!

He didn't fancy the family gathering.

I feel bad for thinking this, but that was my first thought too.

Another vote for making it up as an excuse to get out of joining the family.

DonkeyMcFluff · 23/12/2020 21:28

I knew that people would test positive and still go out because it’s Christmas and they simply must have their turkey. That’s why I’m avoiding supermarkets. There’s a higher chance than ever that selfish infected people will be there.

EddieBananas · 23/12/2020 21:42

Well, people don't think it applies to them.

We're tier 4 and our neighbours were having a soiree with another family in their garage earlier.

GlowingOrb · 23/12/2020 21:49

I really hope your right and he lied about the test. I’ve just accepted that the family will be angry with us, but he is definitely a life of the party, keep everyone happy type, so you might be right.

Scottishskifun · 23/12/2020 21:51

This is the exact reason we don't go to the supermarket!

PicsInRed · 23/12/2020 21:56

That man doesn't have COVID 😂 His excuse was better than yours OP. You gonna keep his secret?

GlowingOrb · 23/12/2020 22:07

I am not going to say a word about what I saw, except maybe to my DH and he won’t tell the family either. If he lied, I don’t want to start a family argument and if he did go out sick, the damage is done for the random public and I already know he isn’t seeing the family so it won’t do anything to protect them.

The whole things makes me a bit nostalgic for the anonymity of city life.

Did he see you?

seven201 · 23/12/2020 22:11

How did he justify being out? What a selfish knob!

halfpasteleven · 23/12/2020 22:12

Yes, how did he justify being out, providing he really has tested positive?

Sparklfairy · 23/12/2020 22:14

Oh god yes Grin when I lived in a small town gossip was everywhere and privacy was impossible Grin much prefer the city I live in now where no one knows me!

I’ve seen 2 people in the shops who I know should be isolating which is why I won’t fully blame the government. Unless they put us all under house arrest with tanks on the street the virus will spread.

BrutusMcDogface · 23/12/2020 22:15

I also think he was lying.

However, I’ve just returned from picking up an order in Argos where a man was standing there coughing- continuous, dry. Eventually he walked out of the shop. Scary.

I'm not surprised. I bumped into my elderly neighbour yesterday when I was putting the bins out. They are in their lates 70s. Husband has a heart condition. I asked if they were OK for Christmas shopping and if I could get them anything in my grocery delivery today. He said no thanks, I'm not meant to say anything, but we're going to our daughter's for the week.
We're all South East tier 4 and the daughter is 60 miles away in Kent.
