Will the vaccine protect against new strains?

Will it? I keep reading conflicting info on this. Some sources saying it will work against the new mutations and others saying the vaccine will need to be reformulated?

It is highly likely to work fine, because the section of the virus protein structure which is targeted by the virus hasn't mutated in the new strain. You won't see a scientist stating categorically that it will definitely work because any decent scientist won't make a firm statement until appropriate experiments give definitive data, but as near as dammit it is fine.

I've not a bloody clue 😭

How2Help · 23/12/2020 23:45

Yes it will. The vaccine is based on more than one part of the virus, so even if one of those bits mutates and no longer ‘works’ for the vaccine the other bits will.

The discussion about tweaking the vaccine started when the position with the mutation was less clear than it is now, and also addresses what happens if future mutations cause issues.

Does this work? She talks about the vaccine after a few minutes

How do you expect random people on mumsnet to3 know if scientists don't??

notangelinajolie · 24/12/2020 00:06

Yes, the scientists say it will.

BaileyBoos · 24/12/2020 09:17

Thanks all, very helpful.

@KitKatastrophe I know that, however there’s plenty of posters who are more scientifically minded than myself, so I can ask whatever I like on a covid discussion board.
