Rutland is a tiny County in the Midlands, next to Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Very close to Peterborough. And is a tiny island of Tier 2 surrounded by Tier3/4.
It also has low CV cases. It's very rural. Like the surrounding district.

Taken independently... T2 makes sense. But looking at surrounding areas... Does anyone else feel this tiny T2 island is a bit unwise? And may encourage people to travel in and spread stuff?

I don't wish T3/4 on anyone, but do feel a bit sorry for them in a way. (Only live about 30mins away. Rutland Water is very close to a sports club my DDs normally attend)

They will end up higher up as the locals in t3/4 will travel to there.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/12/2020 17:06

Any pubs or restaurants will be like shining beacons.

I’m actually awaiting an inspection from Rutland council on business premises. I’m going to hazard a guess that won’t be taking place anytime soon.

RatherBeInBed · 23/12/2020 17:10

It also contains a large boarding school which surely increases the risk of spread with hundreds of people travelling in from other areas.

mummymathsteacher · 23/12/2020 17:12

The villages on the edges have had a lot of additional visitors for pubs etc. It doesn't make any sense

Christmasbeach · 23/12/2020 17:26

I think the Rutland/educated mentality may help. There’s a couple of towns which may be at risk but there’s a lot of independent shops/restaurants who will probably have a firm hand on the situation.

People may travel from p’boro for a drink but they’ll probably not be able to afford a taxi and I can imagine most village landlords know everyone and will turn them away.

I’ve not been to rutland for a while but there’s no major shopping centre? I think they’ve just got their first Aldi/Lidl and when I was local there wasn’t even a McDonald’s.

I can imagine some old man in his wellies, shot gun and dog telling outsiders that they’re not welcome.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 23/12/2020 18:22

Hopefully they won't get too many people trying their luck.

A few weeks ago when Lincolnshire went into T3 I was rather jealous of Rutland and their ability to rule their own destiny rather than be judged by places miles away.

I run Covid Messenger and in all the bleak data, every day there are a handful of council areas that I can't help being thrilled to see are doing so well. From tier 4 can I just say: Well done Rutland! Stay safe! You are doing great!! Wish we had the same case levels where I live!

Katie517 · 23/12/2020 18:56

I’m from Northamptonshire and before today we were alone with Rushden in tier 2 surrounded by tier 3/4, I was surprised when they announced we were moving up that they left Rutland in tier 2 but time will tell I guess. My South Northants fairly rural town/village has been inundated this week with people from tier 4 Milton Keynes coming to hairdressers and restaurants so I feel the same will happen in Rutland. It’s such a shame and I feel so bad for restaurants and cafes who since the tier review last week had thought they would be open until at least the next tier review on the 30th and had planned and bought stock to cover the Xmas period.

Katie517 · 23/12/2020 18:58

Rutland not Rushden Confused

EdithWeston · 23/12/2020 19:11

Rutland, or rather Oakham itself, has a disproportionately high number of elderly residents.

It would be awful if they did get an outbreak there

But hopefully, given the high number of care homes relative to size of population, there will be many people vaccinated fairly early

In lockdown 1 they closed the carparks at Rutland Water to dissuade visitors.

JacobReesMogadishu · 23/12/2020 19:12

Maybe the local police will do spot checks in the pubs, etc. York police are doing this and issuing on the spot fines for people who aren’t local.

user1471528245 · 23/12/2020 19:28

My son lives in Rutland, mostly large spread out villages with the town of Oakham which is not large compared to most towns, my son told me that the police were dropping in on cafes, pubs, restaurants and asking where people were from, also as someone said Oakham is a good distance from Peterborough, Stamford, Leicester so unlikely to attract many from these location

RutlandVasey · 24/12/2020 12:57

I took the dog to Sykes Lane today and the Crazy Fox was closed. Don’t blame them. The place was full of people from other tiers with dogs off leads by the dam and young women in mini skirts and bare legs

EdithWeston · 24/12/2020 13:16

She must be mad - there's a microclimate on that dam!

No matter which way you turn, the wind is in you face. And it's either icy cold or it delivers a mouthful of midges

RutlandVasey · 24/12/2020 13:37

You are so right. I have come home looking as if I have cried my eyes out whilst in one of those sky diving wind tunnels.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 24/12/2020 14:17

Dont make it sound too appealing, everyone will be travelling to Rutland!

Are there Gurkhas still stationed at at St George’s barracks? I’d imagine they could be quite persuasive if need be.

Even more importantly is the Lake Isle in Uppingham still going strong?

RutlandVasey · 24/12/2020 15:10

No Ghurkas, no more army medics. Just sniffer dogs and a few squaddies.

The Lake Isle was lovely when I went there last December. I think it still open ATM. The Wildwood didn’t survive lockdown, though.
