Tier 4. I'm cooking the duck & the goose; dd cooking the lamb. There's so many of us you see!

I've just had this conversation with a lady who was here in a professional capacity this afternoon. I'm not going to mention the profession as I'll be slated for slating the profession.

In any case, the lady was talking about Christmas plans. She said 'we're all within 5 minutes of each other - my brothers and sisters and my 2 children (in their 40's she mentioned)".

So she said that she would be cooking the duck and the goose and her dd would be cooking the lamb - as 'there's so many of us'.

We're in a London Borough ravaged by new spike - communicated to me from the body this lady works for.

She did say that they all got tests yesterday and 'we're all negative'.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, I'll be spending Christmas home alone.

Don't worry, I'm not going to complain, or report or anything else. I'm just a little bemused perhaps.

Why do you care? Mind your own business.

PattyPan · 23/12/2020 16:22

I was speaking to a uni friend in London a few days ago. She said her trip away was cancelled because of the new rules, so she was just going to have dinner with a group of friends instead. Oh, and it was quite close by so she would get an Uber so that would be fine. Hmm This is an intelligent person! I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, especially after she’d just heard about how the rest of our friendship group were all spending Christmas just with their households. So stupid and selfish.

iftherewereahorseyinthehouse · 23/12/2020 16:25

Is she a member of the cabinet?

Frazzled2207 · 23/12/2020 16:27

shocking. The problem though really is that there's never been any proper enforcement of the rules and people know this .So basically an ignorant and 'they don't apply to me' 20% are prolonging the agony for the rest of us .Beggars belief really.

sundowners · 23/12/2020 16:36

I agree, mind your own business. Silly of her to be speaking so openly, but honestly when looking back at this, threads like this with people eves-dropping on others and getting so horrified that people wanted to still see their own family on Christmas day will just show us how ridiculous this all became.

If someone isn't extremely vulnerable, if they've been your bubble up to now anyway, if nobody has symptoms, if you sit spaced apart in a room with windows open for a few hours on Christmas day- I cant get outraged that people will still want to do this.

It's the behaviour of those who have refused to wear their masks/not worn them the right way knowingly. Who handle stuff on shop shelves literally fondling it, coughing over it, then put it back. Or stand so close to you in queues they are breathing down your neck...its the behaviour of these idiots who have caused this, and they will be the ones not paying a bit of attention if still meeting on Christmas day either.

People with an ounce of common sense know how to still be very safe if mixing with a small amount of family on Christmas Day. It's not rocket science. Don't punish people who don't want to waste £100s in bought food or who have only obediently gone along with every single rule because they had Christmas Day as the beacon of hope to hold onto.

I can see for many on here Christmas day- whether it's not buying into the concept or family politics - is nothing special, you can give or take it. For MANY people it is a day they think about and plan for all year long. If you don't fall into this camp you just wont get it.

TammyHullfigure · 23/12/2020 16:40

@movingonup20

There's dozens of people arrived from London since Saturday, consequently we've been dumped back into tier 3. People think the rules don't apply to them
That's not the reason. Don't be ridiculous

It is everyone's business to care. What you do - fucking unfortunately for me - does effect what happens to other people's lives and god almighty I'd have thought Covid would have made that clear to anyone of the meanest understanding.
Belepheron · 23/12/2020 16:55

If only I could believe that people had "common sense". I don't believe any longer that people will do what you suggest - what they will do is TELL themselves and others that they will take those precautions and then to totally forget about doing so.
@lcdododo wtaf?! Are you a troll by any chance?

Is she a teacher by any chance, OP?
No, I but I am a teacher.

I simply though that OP wasn't mentioning the profession for fear of being accused of being a 'teacher basher'

Yet although she didn't mention the exact profession, she clearly wants to.

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 23/12/2020 19:03

Way back in March my DH quoted someone he'd heard on the radio who said that how well we would do would defined by "how dense your population is and how dense your population is" oh how right that person was!!

FizzyPink · 23/12/2020 19:12

I have an acquaintance on Instagram whose husband is a GP. You wouldn’t believe the number of people they’ve had in and out of their house during the lockdowns and now tiers.
Surely if you’re going to flout the rules like that, don’t post it for all the world to see!

FamilyOfAliens · 23/12/2020 19:24

So because you personally spend all year planning for one solitary day, anyone who doesn’t, and who would prefer to have the chance of seeing their loved ones next Christmas - doesn’t “get it”?

StatisticalSense · 23/12/2020 19:30

Is she a Sky News journalist by any chance?
I could certainly see why they would be broadcasting plans to break the rules when the precedent for rule breaking is an extended period of paid leave.

Divebar · 23/12/2020 19:35

Apparently there have been some £500 fines given out in Tier 4 areas. No idea if that’s likely to happen on Xmas day or not.

I completely agree.

PicsInRed · 23/12/2020 21:04

It's Nicola Sturgeon, isnt it OP. It's ok, you can tell us.

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 23/12/2020 21:59

I wasn't eavesdropping (or eves-dropping either). She was chatting to me, telling me all. Quite apart from current circumstances, she really could have kept her plans to herself anyway.
Lol - unfortunately we don't have Nicola Sturgeon dropping in on Londoners, no. Perhaps she visits Glaswegians?

No, it just makes you sound a bit mad.

IntermittentParps · 24/12/2020 12:52

It sounds mad if you point out that the nature of a pandemic is that what everyone does affects everyone else? Hmm
The phrase 'the meanest understanding' is highly apposite here, clearly.

Sitdowncupoftea · 24/12/2020 13:37

Let them get on with it. As long as you protect yourself and stay safe thats all that matters.
