Traffic on Xmas day

I may be wrong but has the govt legally mandated the world's worst traffic jam? I mean no one can spend the night so everyone in the country has to drive on Xmas morning to their relatives. It's going to be madness, right?

Hopefully most people have decided just to stay at home.

unchienandalusia · 23/12/2020 12:24

Not everyone in the country thanks. We're tier 4 so no ones going anywhere.

Coasterfan · 23/12/2020 12:26

I don’t think it will be bad, we are staying at home as is everyone else I know, plus if you are visiting as a support bubble you can stay over. Even looking at threads on here most people seem to be either staying home or travelling and staying as a support bubble.

AuntieStella · 23/12/2020 12:29

Yes, I think it could be awful, even allowing for tier 4 (because, if MN is representative, so many people are decreeing their Christmas mixing a support bubble).

I hope there are no RTAs - not just out of common humanity, but also because blocking a major route for a few hours is bad enough at normal times

Bluewavescrashing · 23/12/2020 12:32

This thought popped into my head last night. Hopefully no drink driving accidents

Parky04 · 23/12/2020 12:37

In Tier 4 so staying at home (like we do every year 😄). I think roads will be relatively quiet.

Mousehole10 · 23/12/2020 13:05

Well seeing as your supposed to keep local hopefully it won’t be too bad. But yes tier 4 here so no ones going anywhere Sad

LynetteScavo · 23/12/2020 13:09

We'd usually be travelling a short distance to grandparents, or they'd come to us, but not this year. There won't be traffic jams- the most people are out is when they're going to school and work on a usual week day morning - and we have the infrastructure for that (just about!)

MummaBear4321 · 23/12/2020 13:12

We were meant to travel 40 mins to PIL on xmas day, but the thoughts of a 6 week old and a newly potty trained 2 year old stuck in a traffic jam gave me palpitations. They are coming to us now. MIL not too impressed but she isnt likely to pee herself on the journey.

fizzyp0p · 23/12/2020 13:29

I'm concerned about the potential of drink driving. People driving home Christmas evening thinking oh I only had a couple of drinks with dinner I'll be fine.... but hopefully won't be the case.

Many people will be staying at home.
People wont want to travel more than a few hours as they can only go for the day.
Anyone travelling a long way will presumably leave early to make the most of the day, so at peak time it wont be too busy.

TheGreatWave · 23/12/2020 13:57

My concern is those who drink and drive.
We won't be going anywhere, only local family is MIL and she's is hospital, so banned from seeing her.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 23/12/2020 14:08

Tier 4 have to stay home and non essential travel is advised against so hopefully there will be less out than normal Christmas days. Like others, I do worry about the amount of potential drink drivers.

I’d imagine lots will be like us and staying home regardless of tier. The less chances the virus has to spread the better.
