School for vulnerable/key worker children

For secondary schools, exam years (primarily Y11 and Y13) will be prioritised for face to face teaching from 4 January 2021, along with vulnerable children (those with EHC plans and/or a social worker) and the children of key workers. The remainder of students will receive online education for that week.

Can someone please interpret the above advice please. It appears to say that the above children will get face to face teaching but my DSs school have stated that children with EHCPs and key workers children will be provided with the equipment to take part in the online lessons while at school.

During the previous lockdown my DD was in and received the same as those at home. However this time around I will be ensuring her ehcp intervention provision is provided still.

I would argue that vulnerable and ehcp kids really should be receiving proper teaching. Fair doesn't always mean the same and the disadvantage those groups of children face IMO makes it reasonable to teach them properly

When we did that in the summer term, the children in school were heavily supported to complete the work that everyone in their classes were having provided.

By teachers I should say. Some teachers were providing video lessons, others were in school supporting it. The V and KW groups were mixed year groups.

My school is asking teachers to follow their normal timetable. They are to teach live lessons (where possible) online and ensure work is of a good quality. Work is now quality controlled unlike during the first wave.

Teaching assistants and admin staff will be working from school, taking care of vulnerable learners and key workers children, which is why these children cannot be taught by a teacher. The teachers are all running their lessons.

I think this is going to be how many schools do the blended learning come January.

Would love to to know how the subjects requiring specialist equipment will cope with this. Kids expected to all whip out their keyboards and African drums during Music? Set up their trampoline in their 2nd floor flat?

Dd's TA said to me that it would be the same stuff she was doing at home when she was eligible after the last lockdown. School comms indicate the same for January. She didn't go in.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/12/2020 01:35

if they can't access the online provision due to their disability can you apply for an echp? (bit late I know, but...)

StatisticalSense · 23/12/2020 01:39

Where possible non-teaching staff should be supervising the kids in school (with the exception of exam years who should follow their normal timetable as the entire year should be in school) as this allows teaching staff to focus on the provision of online learning. This means the children of keyworkers and those vulnerable due to family circumstances will be accessing the same online learning as everyone else however some with specific disabilities will be able to continue with some intervention work if sufficient staffing is in place.

Weve requested a keyworker place for dd. If she gets one she will be supervised in a computer room doing online learning. Same as everyone else but not home alone.
