How likely is it to develop symptoms after close contact?

I spent 5.5 hours with my sister who is in my support bubble on Friday they developed symptoms on Saturday (they are doing the 2x a week lateral flow tests). There was no social distancing etc we were talking and hugged etc.

I know that I have to self isolate and I am doing so, I am just wondering how likely is it for me to actually have caught it? She only has mild symptoms, and her partner has none. But ive googled that people are most likely to spread it within the 48 hours before they test positive?

There's absolutely no way to know, you'll have to wait and see. I'm sure you'll get loads of anecdata but it won't tell you anything about whether you will catch it

Why no social distancing?

MitziK · 22/12/2020 17:10

No way of telling. It could be the original version, it could be a more transmissible variety - but you do have a more than fair chance of having caught it from the behaviour you describe. The cases I know of recently have been from less close contact for significantly less time.

Odds are you'll know by Christmas Day if you have caught it.

@satnighttakeaway I thought we dont have to socially distance with support bubble. And by no social distancing I mean I sat on the sofa with her etc.

@MitziK

I think you're probably right. I will be suprised if I dont have it, but I got ill in march with flu like symptoms. So if I dont have it then I will assume that was covid

Im not in a bubble so don't know about the rules for those, my question was a generic one. I don't know anyone who is hugging adults they don't live with.

I had close contact with a positive case. Similar to you. I’m now on day 14 and nothing. Had a test on day 8 (testing regularly via work) and came back negative, though that was probably still early.

BlueStarRose · 22/12/2020 17:25

It’s impossible to say. Even the new variant is not as contagious as say measles (in the case of measles 90% of close contacts who are not immune will contract it). It is more contagious then normal flu. Sadly, you’ll just have to sit it out and keep fingers crossed.

@Mumofoneee I can confirm your understanding of support bubbles is correct. If you're a single person you're allowed to bubble up with another household- and sit next to them, and even hug them if you wish!

It's so that single people living alone, or single parent households aren't devoid of company.

No way to know I'm afraid. My son had Covid a few weeks ago though, he's only three so I was wiping his bum and nose and all that, plus we still cosleep. We have two other children and none of the rest of us caught it. So it's not a given that you will get it.

I don't think you can assume that.

My DD didn’t catch it from her best friend - they are on a bus together for an hour a day (masks on) and eat snack and lunch together each day. They also went for a walk together the night before her friend developed symptoms. No masks then

If either the OP or her sister live by themselves or are a single parent of DC under 18 they can make a support bubble with another household and in that bubble they can act as if they are one household so they don't have to distance and can stay overnight .
