Getting cab xmas day

timeforanewstart · 22/12/2020 10:52

So with the new restrictions of only mixing on xmas day , in order to be able to have a drink we would need to get a cab home
Although only 10 mins in the car its a good 45 min walk ans through some poor unlit places
Cabs are open , I have checked
But is this not then potentially putting another person in the mix?
Where as if we were allowed to stay as before and then drive home next day , same people being at risk as such
I can't get my head around why if we go xmas day why staying the night would be more risky ?

Is having a drink that important? Just drive. There are many of us who can’t even see family for one day as we are in tier 4, take what you’ve been given and be happy you’re allowed that.

timeforanewstart · 22/12/2020 11:03

Yes I would like a drink as I won't even drive after one bucks fizz
Yes its sad for tier 4 and I would follow the rules if in that area
So getting a cab is within the rules in my area just can't see why getting a cab home is safer than staying is all I am saying

Or is the risk not there in cab as they have a mask on as so we and many seem to have put perspex or at least thick plastic sheeting between them and passengers

I’m sure the taxi company would be grateful for the business. If you’re happy to use them, go for it. Wear a mask. The driver will most likely be wearing a mask as well.

Staying overnight increases the exposure. The longer you’re together, the longer the virus has to spread.

TheQueef · 22/12/2020 11:06

Cabs have protection now.
If it's a minicab be aware of May only seat three because of the divider.

supersonicginandtonic · 22/12/2020 11:06

I've been using taxis instead of buses as there are less people. The drivers have all worn masks and been using hand sanitizers and driving with the windows slightly open. I felt very safe. I'd go for it. Enjoy your Christmas

TheQueef · 22/12/2020 11:07

It may. Not of May.

timeforanewstart · 22/12/2020 11:10

@Thequeef
They all seem to be driving 7/8 seaters round here mostly so 4 isn't an issue
And I would have to pre book anyway

Cabs cannot be banned because they are a necessity for many people who rely on them for essential transport.

Staying overnight is massively increasing the exposure between people in that house.

It’s not a direct comparison as to which is safer.

Abraxan · 22/12/2020 11:12

Getting a taxi is perfectly acceptable.
The taxis I've been in since covid have all had glass screens installed and both driver and passengers have worn masks. They've felt safe.

Many taxi firms run in Christmas Day and are happy to take the work. Round here many of those driving the taxis don't celebrate Christmas Day so they are happy to work on the 25th.

One of the issues with everything now being all in one day and no overnight stays allowed is that there is more risk of people taking the risk to have 'just the one drink' and drive home unfortunately. It's good that people are avoiding this.

Whilst it's very hard for those in tier 4, unfortunately tier 4 residents can't expect those not in tier 4 to abide by tier 4 rules just because they have to. When those people were in a lower tier few abided by higher rules despite them being enforced in other parts of England,

Beenaboutabit · 22/12/2020 11:17

Agree with others- get a black cab, wear a mask, and open the window a bit.

LizzieMacQueen · 22/12/2020 11:18

I'm confused with the logic banning overnights because I thought if you've got auntie jeannie (who'd be alone otherwise) coming for xmas lunch then the likelihood is, if any one of you has the virus, you'd have contaminated each other before you've got to desserts.

FatGirlShrinking · 22/12/2020 11:19

Or have a single drink early on and then refrain for a few hours.

Drinking isn't mandatory or important enough to justify the need for an overnight stay.

So the options are.

Drink one then refrain for several hours and drive

Drink none and drive

Drink and get a taxi

All perfectly reasonable and still allow you to socialise and have a nice day with your family, something many many people would tear your arm off to have the opportunity to do.

timeforanewstart · 22/12/2020 11:20

Have booked a cab
And yes I agree I think that there is a risk of more people drink / driving by misjudging , thats why I never have even just one drink and drive as you never know what may put you over the limit

@lizziemcqueen yes thats what I don't get as round a table you have a risk , going to sleep in another bedroom in house door closed I would thought less risk ?
i think though because Tier 4 have been basically banned from doing anything much then he couldn't allow other tiers much else
Although I am not sure rules on staying overnight in tier 1 as they are still allowed to mix indoors
I am tier 2 area so only mixing outdoors is allowed.
But then i know of lots mixing and staying as they are in support bubbles
Single parents with a couple of children staying , then both lots of kids are going to their dads next day , all allowed of course but basically min of 4 households mixing there even if indirectly
And also lots with under 1's using support bubble for xmas
My friend has childcare bubble with her parents and she is round there or them round hers all the time as she thinks they are allowed as a bubble and are staying with each other over xmas , so think there will be more mixing that boris planned
As well as those that will ignore the rules totally

Also this isn't relative to thread as such but if worst case someone develops covid symptoms that day you are there do you all stay put until they have a test and if positive stay put and isolate there or head off home straightaway ( obviously not in a cab )

I actually think the overnight ban is there to discourage people travelling long distances. People will stay local rather than making a three hour trek if they can’t stay overnight.

I’d be sorting a taxi and having a drink.

NewLockdownNewMe · 22/12/2020 11:37

Staying overnight means:

  • a longer period in the same room (most people will leave to go home earlier than they would go to bed) also late at night so it’ll be cold and any windows open in the day will probably be closed
  • more alcohol drunk (due to expense of cabs)
  • more mixing the next day (as breakfast turns in to watching a film, turns in to turkey sandwiches for lunch)

It’s not a given that if you’re in the same room as someone positive you’ll catch it - there are plenty of stories of families where someone has avoided it. But the longer spent together, close proximity and limited airflow, all make it more likely.
