Anyone heard anything? Thought we were due to hear about it being okayed last week?

Yes. The new strain could delay approval, then another new strain and then it just falls by the wayside, the reviewing is clearly a moving feast.

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 23:01

Sorry, I have got all depressed now....

Crimples · 21/12/2020 23:01

If it’s efficacy @Phyzzy then why not just fire out the half dose for now and top up later if the data supports it?
Like if you have a headache but only take one paracetamol, you know you can always have another one if it doesn’t do the trick

“Yes @Theotherrudolph I absolutely agree they need to be diligent to ensure safety but from what I’ve read it doesn’t seem to be that side holding things up, it’s the debate over which dose works better. I say get it out there ASAP and then argue over the finer points.
Which is probably why I’m not a scientist in fairness 😂“

If all you are worried about is immediate safety/side effects then you might have a point - but there’s far more at stake here, including public confidence in the vaccine, without which it is useless anyway (if people won’t take it then we might as well not have it). You don’t think the dose is kind of fundamental to the whole thing? You think it’s “a finer point”? Do you think the public will be queuing up for it on that basis, and if the dose they’re given is wrong/less efficacious they’ll be ok with that? (And it’s not oil in a car, “top ups” don’t necessarily work the same way as a bigger dose to start with, hence the whole controversy in the first place.)

Seriously, actual professionals with actual qualifications who’ve spent their lives doing this stuff are working on it and have sight of lots of stuff we don’t. I’m confident if just giving it to people and working out the dose later was sensible they’d have done it. They may still do it, but at least with an understanding of the risks involved. I doubt they’re unaware of the urgency.

And yes, of course a select group of people will know before Joe Public what the answer will be - they have to brief ministers and nhs chiefs etc. But I don’t think it’s going to be waiting for a scheduled meeting, Christmas Day or just sitting on an envelope awaiting the “proclaimed” date.

If you don't give the best dose all you do is give the virus more chance to mutate and become resistant. So it's not a case of throw something out there, it's a case of get it right first time.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 21/12/2020 23:05

@CoronaIsWatching

Sounds like they don't think it works against the new strain
No it doesn’t! They will be deciding based on data from the trials so far, it won’t have anything to do with what is going on with the new strain.
titchy · 21/12/2020 23:06

Because vaccines don't work in the same way as paracetamol. You don't get a giant dose of tetanus vax as a baby and then you're done for life. You need to wait till the immune response has died down then get a booster.

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 23:06

The rumours will start after Xmas, leaks to certain papers etc. Big build up. Sky love that sort of thing.

Crimples · 21/12/2020 23:07

@Bathroom12345 sorry if this thread has made you feel that way 💐
I think overall the thoughts are that theres no reason to think that the vaccines wouldn’t work with new variant so keep fingers crossed 🤞

I thought data (maybe from US side) was being sent over today and it is looking next week.

The regulators would not be involved in checking regarding the new strain would they

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 23:07

If it gets delayed then I am not sure what we will do.

Bathroom12345 · 21/12/2020 23:09

It’s a very important thread and essential that we debate and discuss it

Fair play, thanks for explaining 💐 As I said, it’s a good job I’m not a scientist. Just an (impatient) lay person I guess!

debate and discuss what? At the moment it isnt delayed - final data was sent today and it was looking at the 28/29th. Then will roll out.

At the moment no evidence it doesnt work

www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-55388846

Is a very good article - even if it does mutate it shouldnt be that hard to tweak it like we do every year with flu.

This will become like the flu we just need to get through this bit

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 21/12/2020 23:31

@Bathroom12345 thankfully i dont think you need to worry about the speed at which the Govt work because its immunologists , independent scientists etc managing this .
Thank God... If it was the Govt leading on vaccines then quite honestly i think we would all be starring in our own Apocalyptic style film ..

shalalala · 26/12/2020 18:42

I've heard rumours of the 28th but don't know why or how there is a rumoured date
