I'm upset by how divided this is making us

Just that, really. Everyone seems so angry! All this flouting and flaunting and flagrantly flocking. People accused of killing other people. People mocking others for their anxieties.

I get that it is testing, but all this anger can't be helping anyone!

BeanieB2020 · 21/12/2020 19:17

Agreed. It's awful.

Xerochrysum · 21/12/2020 19:23

I only see the extremely angry people on MN, not irl, tbh.

Jourdain11 · 21/12/2020 19:23

I mean, I kind of hope it's just people venting their wrath on the internet behind a shield of anonymity. But being called stupid, neurotic, selfish, entitled or whatever is guaranteed to make anyone feel great, if it is by a faceless internet person.

Same thoughts as Xerochrysum

Napqueen1234 · 21/12/2020 19:25

I agree. Exacerbating the north south divide and encouraging judgement of others. If only we as a nation could pull together under a decent government who were managing the situation in an effective way I’m sure we would see those parallels with WWII and the blitz spirit in a more real way.

Xerochrysum · 21/12/2020 19:26

But people who are called that are mostly the people asking questions they already know the answer to.
If someone has real problem that need proper advice, I see those are getting more sympathetic answers.

Unsure33 · 21/12/2020 19:28

I agree . It’s bad and the newspaper’s and media seem to be revelling in it as well .

Especially the BBC .I thought they were supposed to be unbiased ?

It’s obvious they are not .

I wish we were pulling together like in the war.

Mintjulia · 21/12/2020 19:29

In real life I see the opposite, people offering to help those separated from their families by covid.

Those offering to shop for others, or collect prescriptions.

peppermintteadrinker · 21/12/2020 19:29

I think it started with Brexit,is fuelled by social media which does nothing but reinforce your views whichever they are..and now covid is the same. You're a tin foil hat covid denier or a wimpy sheep. There's no room for nuanced debate in Boris's Britain. A

Unsure33 · 21/12/2020 19:31

@Xerochrysum

You might be right? I guess it depends on who you mix with .

The language on here is very accusing and self righteous sometimes and you can’t seem to voice an opinion without being shot down .

CrispySeaweedIsReallyCabbage · 21/12/2020 19:31

Mumsnet has always had those people who are fucking weird and overly angry. More so around Christmas. Even more so around this Christmas. Nobody I know is like this IRL thank fuck.

I say this as a long time fan of MN!

Anonymity is definitely the reason. Half if the people on here wouldn't say boo to a goose irl. I mean, this is the website where people are afraid to open their door if someone knocks!
user1493413286 · 21/12/2020 19:32

I only see it on here to be honest; in real life people are giving people the benefit of the doubt

TooOldforBouncyCastles · 21/12/2020 19:32

This! People hold their view which they are comfortable with and then cherry pick the evidence to support it. Name calling makes them feel like they’ve won... it’s utter playground. The minute someone uses, snowflake, Karen, Brexshitter, Remoaner I know they’ve not got a good argument to support their viewpoint.
Unsure33 · 21/12/2020 19:33

@Mintjulia

Yes I must admit in my local town there is lots of help for anyone who asks .A special dedicated Facebook page for local volunteers .

Suprising as it is a Tory holding 🤣

3littlewords · 21/12/2020 19:34

On most occasions I've seen the best in people especially local community literally someone isolating puts a post on Facebook about needing some groceries for example and they'll be inundated with offers of help straight away. Likewise we've had a huge push on getting meals or supplies to anyone struggling financially due to covid the "leave it hanging" trend has massively taken off in my local community. I find its the most negativity and nastiness comes from keyboard warriors both on here and SM rather than physical acts of nastiness

anon444877 · 21/12/2020 19:37

Social media is so vicious because too much of what flits across people's minds gets straight onto the keyboard.

StockTakeAndWatermelons · 21/12/2020 19:40

I’m sure we would see those parallels with WWII and the blitz spirit in a more real way.

I remember my Gran (who was an old teen/young adult in WW2) poo-pooing the idea of the wartime spirit. She always said everyone she remebered from that time was grumpy, moaning about someone else or on the take Grin

Perhaps it ever was thus...

LemonTT · 21/12/2020 19:43

Agree it’s on here. Even other SM sites are less bitter and divided. I think allowing a lot of posts to stand which were fake news and agenda driven was a mistake. MN kept saying that posters were strongly rebutting them. This was the case but eventually people of reason and moderation have given up. Now it’s just people who are anti something shouting at each other.

Saturday night and Sunday were appalling.Lots of people whipping up froth and too many people reacting. In many cases it’s not lockdown or the pandemic impacting their MH it’s their social media activity.

Motnight · 21/12/2020 19:45

Agree with Xerochrysum.

Melange99 · 21/12/2020 19:46

Only on here and on Twitter do I see bile. In RL and on other sites, people just trying to help people through this with kindness and suggestions and help.

DecemberDiana · 21/12/2020 19:50

Stocktake : even the British films of the time that were used as soft propaganda have stock characters of "moaners."

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 21/12/2020 19:55

Aye, I heard that too re 'blitz spirit'. A lot of helping and community spirit, a lot of bitching, moaning and reporting your neighbours for rule breaking.

Redwinestillfine · 21/12/2020 19:57

We have been divided for years, since the referendum. If anything I think the pandemic has brought people together more.

1forAll74 · 21/12/2020 19:57

Yes, social media, and angry keyboard warriors, but it's true, you don't find this anger , stress and critisism all that much ,in real life.
