Has anyone caught COVID outside?

Just that really? I'm particularly interested in recent examples from London and the South East for obvious reasons!

Nobody knows because there is no way of telling where you caught it. Even if you spoke outside to someone who later tested positive, then you did, you couldn’t be sure it was that contact and not another you didn’t know about in a shop or at work or wherever that infected you.

BIWI · 21/12/2020 14:54

How on earth would anyone know where they caught it from?!

KitKatastrophe · 21/12/2020 14:55

How would you know?

Herewego83 · 21/12/2020 14:56

True, but I'm thinking of people who wfh, avoid shops and indoor socialising. Obviously no one can be certain but lots of people have a strong suspicion about where they caught it

I did read a report that they thought 90% were inside ( possibly Germany) so that's 10% outside
Recall a note about crowded outside spaces
Think they cancelled markets on that basis?

Interesting. So has no one heard anecdotally of anyone who thinks they caught it outdoors?

I don't know what the outcome was but does anyone else remember the thread where the OP was sure she's caught it from some runners in a local park even though she hasn't even had a positive test?

time4anothername · 21/12/2020 15:10

yes I have heard anecdotally of a group who met up in a park from 4 households and later that week there was an infection in each household but it is via a friend of a friend of a friend so I have no proof that that is true.

DirtyDancing · 21/12/2020 15:16

I’ve just posted this, which I am being flamed for, but I am just stating the facts of a recent case in SE London. You may conclude from this it was or was not the park... but I’ve just concluded the new stain is a bastard that’s transmitting like wildfire.. so I wear a mask outside now.

Nanny went to park with person who was later positive. Spent the morning together, did not go inside & person lives alone. I would say has been very careful, but can not vouch for every move. Informed as a close contact, now positive.

SE London parks are like a bank holiday on Brighton beach when there is an inch of sun. Over 100+ people in the playground some days (I have photos). I’m convinced hearing the story that this was highly likely to be where it happened.

However, I will add this. She Nanny’ed the day before she found out and the family DO NOT seem to have it. Neg test. she’s not been anywhere else. It’s bloody strange I’ll say that.
Who knows?

Todayisgood2 · 21/12/2020 15:16

A teaching assistant I know met her brother outside, both sd, he tested positive the next day followed by her 4 days later. Who knows if she got it from hom or a big coincidence.

Only a guess but the likliehood of a TA getting covid from an asymptomatic child has got to be orders of magnitude higher that getting it outside when socially distant from 1 person surely
HesterShaw1 · 21/12/2020 15:34

To echo others, how on earth would you know?

Data suggests it's very unlikely.

Drivingho · 21/12/2020 15:37

I know of a football coach who had it and then a couple of the boys he coached came down with it in the right timeframe.
Nothing certain though

Yep I saw that, don't think she ever confirmed if she had a positive test or not. From all of the anecdotes people have mentioned (thanks everyone!) it sounds very very unlikely to get it outside from a brief conversation with someone or from someone running past - even if SD is not always strictly adhered to. But of course we can't be sure, that that poor lady from the previous thread sounded horribly anxious.

No but I know I had contact with someone outside, two days before they developed symptoms and I didn't get it. Or at least I never had any symptoms.

Oh that's interesting, I hope they were ok. Were you socially distanced the whole time? How long were you with them?
OP posts:
Rollingpiglet · 21/12/2020 15:57

They were fine, mild symptoms. We were fairly socially distanced, but couldn't swear to exactly 2 meters at all times. Together about 30 minutes.

Scottishskifun · 21/12/2020 15:57

You can catch it from a face to face conversation or if in close proximity outdoors for more than 15 mins many people underestimate what 2 meters is!

I suppose I'm wondering how long the conversation would need to be and at what proximity to be a risk outdoors

Does anyone else have an anecdote about catching it outdoors?
