Click and collect- Xmas bird too big now

Imaginetoday · 20/12/2020 22:26

We had a Xmas bird ordered with Waitrose click and collect. Due to collect Xmas eve
It was to feed 8 people as there was 5 of us and that meat some cold for Boxing Day salad etc, a pie later
Our family Xmas is now cancelled as my 2 dc are in tier 4. Just DH and me in our tier 2.

I’ve looked to cancel order but I can’t change it now. It hasn’t been paid for yet
Does anyone know if they have bank details that will charge us for it anyway if we don’t collect. Or is there a way to cancel first thing tomorrow? I don’t want to just not collect and like to cancel obviously . I really can’t see how we’d use it and don’t have a big freezer. I already have the freezer full of pre prepared bakes/accompaniment like stuffing, red cabbage, mince pies etc that we’re unlikely to use.
Though it would mean we’re ok in case of brexit supply issues🤣😂
No really don’t want it now. DH and I pretty miserable and may just get takeaway instead or a couple of quick steaks

They have updated their Waitrose Entertaining FAQs today:

“If you now have an unwanted Entertaining item in your Delivery, please tell your driver as soon as they arrive. The driver will remove the item from your order and arrange a full refund. Please do not touch the product – social distancing rules mean the driver will then not be able to accept the return of the product.

If you now have an unwanted Entertaining item in your Collection order, please contact the store. Store contact details can be found on Our Shops.”

I presume they will therefore allow you to cancel the Turkey if you ring the store.

I have an order to collect which I still want but I am in tier 2 and the store is in tier 4. Under the new rules, we’re not supposed to go to collect it!

Ring customer services tomorrow and cancel.

If you are unable to cancel. Could you offer it to food bank or if your area is cooking meals for homeless on xmas day or delivering meals to vunerable people they may be very grateful for a donation

HMSBeagle · 20/12/2020 22:48

@BunsyGirl really? Can you not go into tier four to get food? My bank and Tesco are in a neighbouring town which is 4, I'm tier 2.

Calmandmeasured1 · 20/12/2020 22:52

It isn't Waitrose's fault. I would collect and freeze some of it at least. If anything remove cheap stuff from your freezer like mince pies, stuffing etc and put the much more expensive turkey in instead.

BunsyGirl · 20/12/2020 22:57

@HMSBeagle This is what the Gov website says:

You should not travel into a Tier 4 area from another part of the UK, other than for reasons such as:

travel to work where you cannot work from home
travel to education and for caring responsibilities
to visit (including staying overnight with) those in your support bubble - or your childcare bubble for childcare
to attend hospital, GP and other medical appointments or visits where you have had an accident or are concerned about your health

It doesn’t mention buying food! My DH is going to pick up the order anyway.

HMSBeagle · 20/12/2020 23:05

Ah crap! I cant do click and collect in my county area as im in a small rural area, but next to a big city intier 4. I have a disabled child and really, really dont want to go around the shops with him. I have been using the same store all year. If I move to it another tier 2 area it will be 20 miles away.

Ok...sorry about this ( it’s crap situation but my hysteria is setting in)

Don’t fall fowl of the rules

@HMSBeagle I would go to your usual store. It seems crazy that buying food is not one of the reasons given for travelling into tier 4, particularly for those in rural areas.

listsandbudgets · 20/12/2020 23:59

We've got a similar problem OP. One DSD stuck in Scotland the other in London woth her DPso we've gone from 7 to 4. Ours is on order from local butcher and we've already paid hefty deposit. Same with a large gammon nd lamb for new years eve

My plan is to strip anything left down probably on 28th and batch cook curry, some in white wine and cream sauce, soup, slice and freeze in batches for roasts.. anything left after that goes in sandwiches with cranberry sauce! At least January will be cheap.

Viviennemary · 21/12/2020 00:07

I would collect the food order. It's a perfectly valid reason to go out.

Underhisi · 21/12/2020 06:27

"You should not travel into a Tier 4 area from another part of the UK, other than for reasons such as:"

The reasons are examples of reasonable reasons not an exhaustive list.
It says from another part of the UK rather than from another tier which reads to me that local travel into tier 4 is ok.
So I would say it is ok to travel locally into tier 4 for food shopping.

Jenny4235 · 21/12/2020 06:33

OP you can cancel. My kids have got covid and with all the rule changes obviously we’ve cancelled my parents. I had a huge Waitrose click and collect booked for Xmas even, I just emailed customer services and told them the situation and asked if I could cancel, they cancelled straight away and were really lovely about it. You won’t have any problems. We are just having a roast chicken now as we don’t know if we will be too ill to cook!

gamerchick · 21/12/2020 06:35

Why dont you cook it anyway, strip and freeze portions of it?I do that frequently with turkey, it's handy to have when you want quick meat.

Jenny4235 · 21/12/2020 06:35

Ps. Our only problem is the 5 massive desserts coming from Tesco tomorrow... those I couldn’t cancel. I’m either going to have some happy recovering kids or happy neighbours.

Toomanycats99 · 21/12/2020 07:02

@listsandbudgets

Local butcher here and said they cannot cancel orders but if you call them they will cut turkeys up and vacuum pack etc so you can freeze portions of it.

And the chances are that someone else you know would have been due to go somewhere but now can't and be willing to split some of the cost.

Toomanycats99 · 21/12/2020 07:30

@TW2013

That's true - and reminded me someone on my parents local fb group posted yesterday they needed to get food as could no longer go where they were going and said they were happy to buy off people that were over ordered now.

It can be like swap shop!
