Mask and visor?

For work I wear both a medical grade mask and visor (as well as apron and gloves when required). Given the new strain is appearing to be significantly contagious is anyone considering wearing both whilst shopping?
Other than food shopping I won’t be going anywhere else over the next couple of weeks but given how busy shops are at the minute coupled with the new strain I’m wondering if this is wise.
I’m not medically vulnerable but have been unwell recently and back and forth to the GP for some neurological symptoms. Whilst I don’t think I’m more at risk from Covid than anyone else I just can’t face the thought of being more unwell as I’m already feeling pretty down about my current fatigue and daily discomfort.
I dare say I’ll look a twit with both on but then i felt a twit when we all started out with just masks!

I’m wearing an ffp3 mask in shops now.

But if I didn’t have one, then I think a visor/mask combo is good.

I've wondered about this, I work in retail - quite a small shop and I keep the doors wide open as so worried about lack of ventilation at the moment. I do wear glasses already though so would this give me some protection to my eyes already?

Mycircusmymonkey · 20/12/2020 22:24

Ok glad I don’t sound totally ridiculous. I’ve been careful throughout the pandemic but never extreme. I work in a healthcare role and have never felt worried or unsafe and at times have probably been a bit too relaxed but I must admit to feeling a bit more wary at the minute.

That’s an interesting point about glasses actually. I tend to always wear contact lenses but I do find I regular rub my eyes/ pinch my eye lids with them in as they can get dry. I might switch to wearing glasses all day as it’s a bit more of a reminder to leave my eyes alone.

A visor only stops liquid spray droplets. Given that's there's air gaps all the way around it's pointless in a shop. If you can get a full respirator mask that would be helpful but a visor, no.

I've always thought this when I see a lot of local shop keepers / cafe owners only wearing visors and not masks.

I'm thinking of using a BA set from work when i go in Lidl.

Mycircusmymonkey · 20/12/2020 22:44

That’s why I’m talking about wearing both. I’m aware that a visor alone is not protective enough. I wear both for work (as well as gloves and apron) and this is considered “full PPE”

Not at all op, I've got two visors but one is broken, with a mask it will def give eye protection walking through a cloud of covid. My problem is it makes me feel odd, the lights bouncing off it, the noise, I could only wear it and both for a short time.

Mycircusmymonkey · 20/12/2020 22:46

Ok thanks to the sensible posters. As the evening cunts are out and on form I shall leave the thread where it is.

Night all.

It won't protect you if you walk through a cloud of Covid - it only protects from large droplets and splashes. The gaps around the sides and bottom leave you (and others) open to infection.

I'm in retail and considering getting a ffp3 mask, but where from?
Dont know if I trust Ebay lots of fakes about.

Not completely answering your question, but the rationale behind visor wearing in hospital relates partly to the theoretical risk of covid transmission via ocular secretions (covid enters the eye and then via the naso-lacrimal duct gets into the nose and then gets further down into the respiratory tract). Theoretically it’s possible to get respiratory covid via the eyes (am not sure if any cases have been proven to be purely due to ocular transmission though). So a mask and visor are protecting different things and wearing a mask and eye protection may provide additional protection. It also serves as a useful reminder to not touch your face or fiddle with your mask!
