Petrified the vaccine may not work on the new strain ***title edited for clarity by MNHQ***

I'm really scared the vaccine won't work on the new mutation

I am in tier 4 and know of 3 people with it but not bad symptoms.

I know everyone is anxious at the moment but I was so hopeful the vaccine is the way out

I'm in Tier 4 and shall take care to be cautious but I'm not unduly worried and as I wiggle my toes, I'm certainly not petrified.

Please look up petrified op.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/12/2020 21:53

Actually on the bbc news website there’s a scientist saying it could mutate enough to stop the vaccine working.

Beebityboo · 20/12/2020 21:55

Ffs it took me one second to see she was leading on from her title, petrified because she's worried the vaccines don't work not claiming to know they don't. You can report without making a big old statement of it too, without trying to make the OP feel even more shit.
Anyway, OP, I'm worried too but the best we can do for now is go with what the scientists are saying which is that the vaccines should still work. The next few months will be pretty grim I imagine but all we can do is wait and hope and remember that each day is a day closer to all this shit being over.

TheKeatingFive · 20/12/2020 21:57

It's natural to be worried, especially with so much riding on the vaccine.

From everything I've read, the experts expect there will be no issues with the new variant. The vaccines will work.

Another point that I found comforting is that even if a strain emerges that is resistant to the vaccine, it isn't a big job to tweak the vaccine to address this. The hard work is already done and won't need to be done again.

Of course it could, that’s never been in doubt. But this mutation is not thought to be likely to stop the vaccine working.
Kaylasmum49 · 20/12/2020 22:00

How about offering the op a bit of support instead of making her feel worse. Everyone worries about things to different degrees. What happened to "be kind"?

OP, I understand your fears, I suffer from extreme health anxiety and tend to catastrophise due to this. Hopefully the vaccine will still work on the new strain.

I think they will admit the vaccine is redundant to the new mutation in the new year by which point I’m sure we will hear of other similar mutations around the world, all with differing effects.

Based on what? Have you even read any of the expert views on this?

MrsT777 · 20/12/2020 22:10

@CandyLeBonBon
How rude of you ~ Not at all helpful.

Inkpaperstars · 20/12/2020 22:10

I think that currently they seem fairly confident the vaccine will work against this particular new strain, but of course they are still finding out more about it. There could well be future strains that will evade the vaccine though, that is why it is so important to keep cases low, since every new case is a new chance for mutation. The attitude some have of wanting to get on with things and let it spread doesn’t take account of that. Suppressing any and every case counts.

CandyLeBonBon · 20/12/2020 22:11

I notice the op has now changed their title. So I retract my previous comment because noe they are staying an opinion and not promoting something as misleading fact.

CandyLeBonBon · 20/12/2020 22:13

'Now' and 'stating'

And I reserve the right to express my 'rude' opinion on hyperbolic, click-baity threads which present opinions as facts without any substance to back them up.

ElephantWhaleRabbit · 20/12/2020 22:13

I’m starting to think this forum is becoming a dumping ground for everyone’s anxiety. There is ZERO evidence that the vaccine won’t work on the new variant.

endofthelinefinally · 20/12/2020 22:14

There has been loads of clear, simple information about the vaccines on MSM. I just do not understand why people haven't listened or paid attention.

CaveMum · 20/12/2020 22:16

Have a read of this from The BMJ, it might help assuage your fears:

Will the vaccine still work?
The new variant has mutations to the spike protein that the three leading vaccines are targeting. However, vaccines produce antibodies against many regions in the spike protein, so it’s unlikely that a single change would make the vaccine less effective.

Over time, as more mutations occur, the vaccine may need to be altered. This happens with seasonal flu, which mutates every year, and the vaccine is adjusted accordingly. The SARS-CoV-2 virus doesn’t mutate as quickly as the flu virus, and the vaccines that have so far proved effective in trials are types that can easily be tweaked if necessary

Peacock said, “With this variant there is no evidence that it will evade the vaccination or a human immune response. But if there is an instance of vaccine failure or reinfection then that case should be treated as high priority for genetic sequencing.”

@Thewiseoneincognito Are you serious?!

CandyLeBonBon · 20/12/2020 22:36

This thing is going to keep mutating and changing until it perfects itself and finds its calling.

It's a virus. Not the next wannabe Prima ballerina in the bolshoi ballet!

Maria1990 · 20/12/2020 22:36

There's not too much to worry about, to put it simply, the vaccine trains your body to target a cell with a triangle on it (the spike protein), the Covid mutations are about the equivalent of having a triangle with a flower print or Santa hat on it, your immune response can still 'see' the triangle and will stop it. None of the mutations have changed the spike enough to make it unrecognisable. Also, as viruses mutate, they generally spread quicker but cause milder / no symptoms. This is because if a virus makes you sick, you isolate and it therefore dies before it can spread. If it's mild or asymptomatic, you're more likely to go out and spread it. Only time this wasn't the case was in the war, where the seriously ill were sent on packed buses to packed hospitals where it spread rampantly compared to the more 'social distanced' trenches and camps where the mild versions died out. Hope that helps settle your concerns a bit x

BlueBlancmange · 20/12/2020 23:36

@Thewiseoneincognito

OP you’re right to be concerned. I think they will admit the vaccine is redundant to the new mutation in the new year by which point I’m sure we will hear of other similar mutations around the world, all with differing effects.

This thing is going to keep mutating and changing until it perfects itself and finds its calling. It’s quite the feat of genetic engineering. Who ever created this created a deadly masterpiece and probably didn’t intend for it to get out into the wild.

You're an entertaining troll it has to be said.

There is an interesting lady on Instagram called @kinggutterbaby

She is called Laurel Bristow and she is an infectious disease researcher

Have a look her stories today. It's all about the new strain in the UK

She explains the science in plain English and makes it easy for plebs like me to digest
