When can we see each other?

My partner moved out when he knew he'd been in close contact with a case and then developed covid. I was previously shielding, being in the CEV category.

He is now feeling back to normal but we don't know when it's safe for him to come home and us to be around each other. Has anyone else been through this? What did you do? Thanks.

Would be the standard track and trace 10 days I would imagine? (11 really if you count contact day as day 0)

MotherDanger · 20/12/2020 19:41

He went on to develop covid after the contact and has now recovered. We don't know how long he'll remain contagious afterwards.

Could he ask track and trace for advice?

MotherDanger · 20/12/2020 19:45

He did but they weren't helpful beyond reading the script about the standard isolation periods. Reading online leads us to feel like that's not always clear cut in reality hence me asking what others have experienced. Thanks

If both 10 days have passed and all symptoms gone it is extremely unlikely he is able to pass on.
Even if he has a lingering cough, apparently this is still unlikely after 10 days.

MotherDanger · 20/12/2020 20:52

Thanks. Feels reassuring to hear the same thing from different places.

In hospitals generally you can't leave until you test negative. Could he get a test? I don't know if the testing sites use the same test though I'm afraid.

StatisticalSense · 20/12/2020 21:37

No he can't get a test if he doesn't have symptoms. He should follow the usual advice of 10 days starting the day after developing symptoms (or 48 hours after symptoms go if this is later).

MotherDanger · 20/12/2020 22:56

See this is why I'm freaking out. I'd rather he didn't come back till we knew he had a negative test but can't get a test. Someone in NHS has also advised against having a test as some people test positive for absolutely ages too apparently?

I've got a similar issue. 10 days is the isolation because its very unlikely that someone is still contagious after 10 days. But very unlikely isn't the same as impossible. There's no definitive answer, but after 10 days you're unlikely to catch it from him.

A negative test isn't much use either as people often test positive well after they stop being contagious.

MotherDanger · 21/12/2020 10:44

@2020out that's exactly where we're at. And we can't afford to bank on unlikely :-( too much at stake. It's bloody rubbish isn't it?
