It says, if you put in a Tier 1 or 2 postcode:

However, while it is allowed, the government advises people to avoid travelling to other areas and only to stay overnight with someone else if absolutely necessary.

Does it mean:

  1. Travel is allowed, we advise you not to, but it is allowed.
  2. Christmas Day is allowed with another household, as per other ruling.
  3. Because Christmas Day runs from 12am to 11.59pm you can stay over, as long as it's absolutely necessary. For example, if your mileage is too much for one day.

Please let me know what you think.

I’d say:

  1. Yes
  2. Yes
  3. Possibly

Yes
Yes
Definitely not

That particular statement means (1).

(2) is allowed and explained elsewhere in the rulings.
(3) is not allowed. The guidelines say "only see your bubble on Christmas Day. Do not stay overnight and keep your visits as short as possible"

ForeverBubblegum · 20/12/2020 19:43

I think 3 is more along the lines of "if you're car brake down while you're visiting someone out of town (for example), you can stay over and get a mechanic on boxing day"

Damnit.

This is on the gov guidance page, you just have to scroll a very long way to find it.

So you’re allowed to travel on the 24th and 26th if you need to in order to see your Christmas bubble, but you can only stay in a private rented place, B&B or hotel etc.

Thanks @PinkPlantCase.

The thing is, I want them to stay here. We're likely all clear here. They have their own bedroom and bathroom. Even corridor. I don't see why they should stay in the Travelodge 0.4 miles away when it's more than likely safer in my home! (A smallholding 🙄
