Just this really.

I am concerned that there is something they’re not telling us. Is the new strain worse? I know there is chat about easier/faster spread but is it more deadly? Affecting children?

I’m in Scotland and all of a sudden we are looking at lockdown and school closure. Why now?

In a bit of a pit of despair today. I can live with the Christmas restrictions and will comply. But the thought of going back to school closures while trying to hold down a job...😩 gutted for the kids too.

Looking online at wuhan and china it seems to have been eradicated what are they doing different?
They followed the rules.

well they don't have Piers Corbyn and Davick Icke over there for a start

Also they have a much greater sense of the greater good being priorotised over individual freedoms - people are much more oedient with orders to comply with quaranties then they are here

Also, in China they come down very hard of people putting others at risk. You don't have scenes of wild eyed people ranting "I do not consent!" whilst running around not wearing masks and causing havoc, as you do here. Try that shit in China and you'll really know what an oppressive polive state is, unlike over here

hoodathunkit · 20/12/2020 21:17

arghh pls excuse typos

I'm very worried about my friend who is very ill with covid, feeling depressed by all the covid deniers time for me to take a break

ineedaholidaynow · 20/12/2020 21:20

Didn't they lock people into their flats in Wuhan at the start putting tape on their doors so knew if they had tried to get out. We had a very light lockdown compared to that.

No choice in track and trace. Wouldn't get people crowing that they had given the wrong name and address like you got here.

The problem with China is it's the other extreme. Britain is full of people shouting about their liberties and the rights of the individual, there's no collective here anymore, not in general. Thatcher's Britain you might say.

The modern Germany are a good model for a balanced approach to things.

TheRubyRedshoes · 20/12/2020 21:38

I must admit that, now freight has been stopped, I also feel concerned.

Dh has developed a headache and he is never ill.

I'm worrying about the food and medicines stuck in the ports.
@TrustTheGeneGenie It's actually been confirmed by a couple of people - if staff aren't sick with symptoms they are being asked to go in.
There is just no way that is true. Occupational health would have a field day.

It happened in my area. Was in the local paper

It is posts like yours which are dangerous.
" it is just another strain of flu" so confidently stated and so incorrect.
It will never go away with people like this around. Downplaying it and not fully understanding.

And those it is just like a cold. My 90 year old hran survived. Most people survive.
Just shut up!

i'm in tier 4....essential retail

fair few customers today, out buying non essentials, screaming at us with masks under chins because we have no christmas lights left

the message has not got through....still!! retail staff are sitting ducks and i've had enough of customers demanding next day delivery to that i source their item from another (tier 4) branch.

1 in 3 not wearing masks. or not wearing them properly. hand sanitiser barely touched. probably 1 thousand people in and out of our store today and we all have to mix with them as 2 metres distance is a thing of the past it seems

I'm so sorry you're going through that, it is awful. The store should be letting less people in.

Whilst I agree that we shouldn't be downplaying how serious it is, you do understand that covid is not going to ever go away, right? It is here to stay and will be another yearly thing, like the flu.. That is not me saying it is the flu but that it will come and go like the flu
Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 20/12/2020 22:56

Hapixmas

I meant at pandemic level with lockdown after lockdown. No control!
But if you want to split hairs... knock yourself out.

Hapixmas · 20/12/2020 22:59

@Carrotcakeforbreakfast ah I've got you. No I'm definitely not splitting hairs. I am deeply concerned about it all. I just worry that people think this will go away.

Blankscreen · 20/12/2020 23:00

I live in Surrey and up until 2 weeks ago I didn't know anyone that has had it. Now people seem to be catching it all around me

Strangely though most have said they had had runny nose sore throat and ear ache as the main symptoms not the cough I wonder if they have the new variant.

Maybe that has spread quicker as they weren't the symptoms.we were looking out for

Averyshinynose · 20/12/2020 23:05

I’m worried about the cancelling flights etc, that seems extreme? I’m in another European country and it’s on the news that from midnight no one from uk is allowed in, residents travelling back here to their home country only allowed in with clear test.

tinkerbellla · 20/12/2020 23:06

@cardibach

There are lots of strains. They are being tracked and studied by scientists all over the world. The government might try to pull the wool, but scientists won’t comply. I don’t think there’s anything more dangerous about this strain (scientists - lots of them - have said so) it just transmits itself more efficiently to new hosts. Track down The Andrew Marr show from this morning - interviews with a WHO scientist and a PHE scientist who speak clearly and candidly. I found it very reassuring. The thing I am wondering, though, is kind of the opposite - are the government using this as a cover for changes to Tiers and Christmas which they should have done anyway so they can just shrug and go ‘new science, sorry’? They’ve known about this strain since September.
I think this is what's happening. It's very convenient and I say that as someone who's fairly supportive of the government (unpopular opinion I know), It's a handy tool to scare us, particularly those who may have loosened up a bit with the vaccine coming etc.
tinkerbellla · 20/12/2020 23:11

@herecomestheSon

Take it seriously enough to lay low. A quiet Christmas. Good books, films, nice food (with lots of vegetables and fruit). Look after yourself.

Relish the contacts that you are able to have and write to people that you love. Send them flowers and goodies / notecards / emails as is affordable or suits you.

Get out for walks and cycles if you can.

Take vitamin D if you can.

Its not clear, certainly in England, what is happening with schools. I'm hoping they will put funding both into testing and into making them safer and that will put them on a better footing to stay open (and be good for the kids).

The evidence so far has suggested that, while this virus needs to be taken seriously, it doesn't particularly affect children, and there is no clear indication that this has changed. So put that worry to one side for now .

Staying in and laying low, as much as you can, for the time being is the best way to keep safe and if you are doing that you are doing all thatyou can do.

Giving people space is the right thing to do.

And take 1 day at a time. I day at a time, the winter will come to an end and the hope of a summer remission (or a vaccination) will approach.

Take care x

Smile

That's horrendous. But we're expected to save the nhs and some trusts do this?

Closing the borders to freight is terrifying. This situation requires tact, diplomacy and mutual trust between nations. Johnson is incapable of any of that so we're going to be in a very dangerous situation very shortly.

I don't think the handling of the announcement was conspiracy but it was cackhanded and I think we're looking at serious civil unrest on top of the new strain if something major doesn't change in the government's approach.
