What starter and dessert to make for Christmas day w/o a functioning oven!

On Christmas day we're eating with my parents who are massive foodies, my mum is a completely brilliant (trained) cook. They're doing the main course and we've been asked to do the starter and dessert. I'd be so grateful to hear suggestions for what we might make - it has to be very special and can be challenging but our oven thermostat is broken and only works at the very highest setting, and my mum is allergic to most shellfish except prawns and lobsters. So please all you lovelies, tell me of the most spectacular starters and desserts you've experienced (that I can get the recipes for!) and that don't need to be cooked in an oven other than at a very high temperature. Thank you!

We always have pâtés and toasted breads for a starter.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 20/12/2020 12:51

Melon and parma ham to start! Grin

Smoked salmon.
Could do blinis which you can prepare in advance.

Pudding - cheesecake? Also cheese and crackers

Parsnip and celeriac soup with crispy bacon and chestnuts.

Butter poached lobster with watercress and lemon

Burratta with truffle honey, rocket and toasted hazelnuts.

We usually have smoked trout and brown bread a butter tbh.

Foodie family here.

Smoked salmon with salad or prawn cocktail to start. Trifle or Yule log for dessert.

Prawn cocktail if she can eat prawns. Lots of nice suggestions online for how to do it.

Dessert - the thing with really good quality vanilla ice cream with black coffee and Pedro Ximinez sherry poured over. Very simple but delicious. Jamie Oliver has a recipe for it but there are others out there. No cooking required.

I did smoked salmon and tabbouleh once. Nice and light before the enormous Xmas dinner.

After dinner we have cheese and pate and then a bit of Xmas pudding later on.

We are having smoked salmon.

We are also having a mulled jelly from Mand S as an optional pud. We are doing the Xmas pud in the meecro wah vee.

Other options are

  • cheeseboard of course
  • sorbet as a palate cleanser
  • pavlova
  • festive flavour ice creams (you can buy or make)
  • mince pies & Christmas cake of course!

Good luck!

Mushroom, apple and Sherry soup
Tiramisu or lemon posset

Prawns/smoked salmon with horseradish and creme fraiche dressing on a bed of ginger, honey and lime dressed salad. Warm brown rolls.

I’m doing a pavlova Christmas wreath full of vanilla cream and berries but with your oven it’s a no no, so.....

Christmas pudding ice cream with cinnamon iced shortbread or a no bake cheesecake?
