Given it is 70% more transmissible, what are you doing to protect yourself from Covid? Has this changed?

So at the moment we are:

  • social distancing and wearing masks
  • feeling fairly relaxed if outside in uncrowded spaces
  • doing as little "inside stuff with other people" as possible ie minimal supermarket, vet or shopping trips
  • walking with one other friend or chatting in the street
  • hand washing when come back

We are not:

  • wiping down things as we did before or leaving them 48 hours before touching if not
  • being too worried about what we touch when out and about

BUT does 70% more transmissible mean we should be doing more?

What are you doing? And what do you think makes the difference?

You can't speak for everyone here. That is what you're doing and not doing. Not everyone.

Browneyedgirl20 · 20/12/2020 11:58

I would say I am carrying on as before but minimising travel to stop spread overall. Not relaxing anything for Christmas, not being inside with older relations etc. If this hadn’t happened I would be doing more because of Christmas, but we are staying in nuclear family and not seeing people except locally and outside.

I am getting my hair done soon which feels a bit more risky maybe... but felt safe the last time I went with masks, distancing etc.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 20/12/2020 12:00

All the things that will help a healthy body and mind.
Taking vitamin d and c and zinc.
Ensuring I have a healthy diet
Trying to get decent sleep ( though that one is tricky)
Getting plenty of fresh air and exercise
Living life, spending time with friends etc.

Cecily42 · 20/12/2020 12:00

Pretty much the same as you are doing, but try not to touch anything when out and about and avoid busy outdoor places too.

bumbleymummy · 20/12/2020 12:01

Nothing different to what we were doing before. More contagious doesn’t mean more deadly.

DecemberDiana · 20/12/2020 12:03

I believe it does better in cold weather so I'm a bit less sanguine about outdoor meetups in winter. Mulling it over as I'm lucky enough to live with people, so will I carry on with meet ups with friends outdoors. Hairdressers is another thing I was happy to do but less sure of.

I have older kids at school and that's the likeliest way I'll catch it so don't know at the moment if I'll change anything.

OP is only speaking about herself though.
AwkwardAsAllGetout · 20/12/2020 12:07

Nothing I did would have made a difference here. Whole household has tested positive this weekend after my 8 yo brought it back from school.

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 20/12/2020 12:17

I won't be travelling anywhere, or browsing the poundshop. I live alone anyway, so all I can do is to follow the rules. Probably won't call an ambulance/mental health services when I need them, though where that will leave me, is the Lord's guess only.

I am taking Vit C&D. I spray Dettol antibacterial and wipe surfaces such as door handles when people are in my flat - they're never invited - I just need a few external services at the moment.
And this is my own personal little one as I like the scent - but I burn tea tree oil daily as it's supposedly anti-viral.

Coolieloach · 20/12/2020 12:22

I’m in South Wales. DH & I will continue to work from home, DS1 and 2 will not be going back to school in the foreseeable future, learning online instead. Shopping delivered. We are totally cutting ourselves off until numbers lower

DecemberDiana · 20/12/2020 12:24

Do call emergency services.

Most people aren't that ill with covid. Personal risk is low, it's a problem at a community level.

LovingLen · 20/12/2020 12:26

Have you got children at school?

Mintjulia · 20/12/2020 12:33

We're still in tier 2.

Since March 15th, I've only been inside Tesco, one trip to Waterstones and I visited a relative, also tier 2 in August.

Ds travels on school bus. which requires hand sanitizer and mask. School is very strict and covid-free so far (as far as we know). No play dates inside since summer holidays. It's been a lonely slog!

I'll just try to keep up the same.

bathsh3ba · 20/12/2020 12:37

Staying a bit more local than we otherwise would, as we are in a low incidence village within a Tier 3 area. But other than that, continuing much the same. I don't think isolating more than that is sustainable for the couple of months at least till vaccines start having an effect.

DrunkenKoala · 20/12/2020 12:38

Much the same as you’ve listed in your OP. I get my shopping delivered so will continue to do that. I’m now in tier 4, so I now can’t go for a swim or have my haircut. If they opened the pools I’d probably go but I’m not sure about the hairdressers.

lljkk · 20/12/2020 12:38

does 70% more transmissible mean we should be doing more?

It means Govt will force us to do more.

loveyouradvice · 20/12/2020 14:21

Interesting....

and yes do have a teenager so am very aware that that's our greatest risk.... but big believer in kids being back at school as much as they can. So darn important.

PicsInRed · 20/12/2020 14:26

I'm enjoying as much (legal) freedom as possible - as we'll need all the psychological reserves possible to do a full lockdown should we ever develop a really deadly covid strain. Marathon, not sprint.

Chaotic45 · 20/12/2020 14:27

I have a teenager at school but it is DH who has caught Covid here from working.

18 out of 20 people in his retail workplace have tested positive this week. They had good PPE and stringent procedures in place which he feels confident were followed. We think maybe the lack of natural ventilation was an issue.

Going forward I'll continue to be very careful.

SilverGlitterBaubles · 20/12/2020 14:28

Much the same OP and agreed teen DC are probably our greatest risk. So glad that they are finished school.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 20/12/2020 14:40

Carrying on like before unless they get more info that changes things.. Work and eduction are our biggest risks. We aren’t socialising, ordering everything online, wiping shopping and deliveries down and ensuring good hygiene, exercise and vitamins.

DrunkenKoala · 20/12/2020 14:47

We also have asymptomatic testing going on in our area so as long as we are eligible we’ll go every couple of weeks to get tested. (Have two DC, one secondary the other primary)

That’s why she asked ‘What are YOU doing?’
