Traveling by train through London?

I am in a T2 area and my children need to get to their dads house in another T2 area but to do so we need to travel through London which is in T4.

Unfortunately going by car is not an option as the only people with a car are not in the same household so would mean car sharing with another household which is not allowed (I think?)

They are due to go on the 28th but return 5th Jan (May stay a bit longer now as school return has been delayed)

Is this type of travel allowed?

Yes that type of travel is allowed either to, from, or through tier 4 areas, as children should continue to follow existing contact arrangements in all areas unless they are isolating due to having symptoms or being a close contact of someone who has tested positive (or having been told to by school).

Yes it's fine. Dd has to do similar.

If it were a "straight through" journey it might make a difference vs needing to change, get on the underground/bus then get another train... So Bedford to East Grinstead/Brighton would be different to Norfolk to Bristol.

Would there be a viable route via Birmingham New Street if you're going long distance?

If transferring through London is that a good idea even if it's legal - lot more risk of transmission on the tube and neither tier 2 area wants the new strain...

Thanks for the replies, it is a rail replacement into Newbury Park then onto Woking (one train from Newbury Park) then on to Fareham (T2).

Unfortunately this is the most direct route and also one they are familiar with so I am confident they can navigate the journey and reluctant to change the route in case they get lost
