It's not more 'transmissible'.

It's more con-fucking-tagious.

Just spit it out without inventing new words. Who ever heard of transmissible until 4.20pm today? Does it make it better? No. It means it's more contagious.

There is NO point to this post. None.

It's really not a new word. Just because you've never heard the word before does not mean it's made up...

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 19/12/2020 20:46

And Whitty couldn't say for certain 'anything' about this highly transmissible strain. The Chief Scientific Advisor did at least say that it's thought to have originated in England. Yooohooo. Made in the UK.

Transmissible is a word. It doesn't mean exactly the same as contagious

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 19/12/2020 20:47

It's not a word that I've heard in everyday parlance ever. Ever. They just don't want to say 'contagious'.
OP posts:
LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 19/12/2020 20:48

Transmissible is a word.

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 19/12/2020 20:49

So is furlough and lockdown now. Transmissible means nothing - it doesn't lend the required gravitas that contagious does.

OP posts:
winterbabythistime · 19/12/2020 20:49

I've heard transmissible used before, it's not a new word.

mbosnz · 19/12/2020 20:51

People are more likely to catch it. Regardless of the word.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 19/12/2020 20:51

When I don't know a word I usually check dictionary online rather than claiming it doesn't exist. 😂 Because like that, half an English wouldn't exist😂

BlackberrySky · 19/12/2020 20:51

Presumably when one has been talking incessantly about a contagious illness for almost a year, one develops a few synonyms.....

Sennetti · 19/12/2020 20:51

don't use YOUR word 'parlance' op

ridiculous post

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 19/12/2020 20:52

@LadyTiredWinterBottom2

Transmissible is a word.
I never said it wasn't a word! It's more commonly used in medical subjects relating to genetic mutations being transmissible to offspring or something. I've never heard it used in the context of addressing a nation about the contagiousness of this new virus. A nation who probably don't all have degrees in biochemistry.
OP posts:
iago · 19/12/2020 20:52

We are the world's first transmittable strain of this corona virus. That's brilliant. TG we could not be the world's first/best of anything

lazylinguist · 19/12/2020 20:52

It's a perfectly sensible word. It just means 'able to be transmitted/passed on to someone else'. It also avoids the potential confusion between contagious and infectious, I guess. Out of interest, why do you think 'they don't want to say 'contagious''?

winterbabythistime · 19/12/2020 20:53

I don't have a degree in biochemistry and I know what transmissible means

mbosnz · 19/12/2020 20:54

JCROAFCOAGDPS, this is your current beef?

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 19/12/2020 20:55

Well, we are Great Britain. We can develop our own strain thank you very much! Made in Kent (though this could be queried).

OP posts:
lazylinguist · 19/12/2020 20:55

Transmissible means nothing - it doesn't lend the required gravitas that contagious does.

Gravitas? Confused Since when does the word 'contagious' have gravitas? And how van it not mean anything, when you just denied having said it wasn't a word, and apparently told us what it meant? Grin

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 19/12/2020 20:57

Be as pedantic as you like, but you know that they edited out every incident of contagious and replaced it with the less frightening 'transmissible'. Don't want the sterling crashing again do we.

OP posts:
RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 19/12/2020 20:59

I do apologise Dear Nation, but this is a highly contagious strain that we appear to have home-grown.

OP posts:
EmpressPenguin · 19/12/2020 20:59

Agree, transmissible is a looser word, sounds less scary than contagious and is less precisely descriptive. Could refer to anything capable of being transmitted, not just disease. Maybe this is just the word in vogue with professionals these days, but cant think why you would use it when you've got a perfectly serviceable descriptor. Although it would fit with the overall vagueness so maybe it's just about being careful not to commit too much either way Hmm

SmileyClare · 19/12/2020 21:00

I get your anger Op, everything is fucking frustrating. Your tension seems to have been completely directed at the word "transmissable" . It's good to vent though Wine

RudolphToldRedNoseNotSymptom · 19/12/2020 21:04

Yes, just having a vent into the void. Ignore me. It's not transmissible.

OP posts:
RB68 · 19/12/2020 21:09

doesn't matter what fucking word you use - we are fucked the mening is clear
