Tier three, au pair returning home.

So a friend has asked me to try and unravel this. Her daughter is au pairing in a European city. Friend is in tier three. They looked into her coming home for 6 days (her host family are going to gps in another close country for two weeks.) and found she could, if she isolated and left within the 10 day quarantine window. But with today’s announcement little has been said apart from avoid international travel. She and her mum are really upset. (Personally I don’t think they should have made the plans btw) Her dad is panicking that her return flight might be cancelled. But apart from the woolly “avoid travel” advice we can’t find anything. Can anyone shed any light. Please don’t say they are idiots etc, they might be, but are looking for a solution.

Just come back? What else is she going to do. She won't be arrested for getting on a plane.

viccat · 19/12/2020 19:17

People are always allowed to return to their native country, it's more the going back abroad again that may be a problem.

It does say travelling out of uk for work is ok.

However she will need to either isolate for 10 days before leaving the U.K., or she could take part in the Test to Release scheme and buy a private test to take after 5 days of arrival to get out of the 10 day quarantine. She would need this to be able to get on a plane.
BexR · 19/12/2020 19:39

It was my understanding she would have to isolate on arrival in uk for 5 days then get private test, if negative then she can mingle within tier 3 rules. If she doesn't get private test then she would need to isolate 10 days.

I assume she can list her parents address as her isolation station.

I cant see people refusing to let her leave the country to resume her au pair job. She might have to observe the other country's isolation rules though which I guess would affect her job.

I'll give a little run down on what my plans are for travel to the U.K. from Germany in the next few days with the hopes it will help your friends daughter:

I travel from Germany to the U.K. on 22.12.20.
I will isolate for 5 days, and then take a private test on 27.12.20.
I will continue to isolate until I receive my results back, within 24-48 hours later.
I will then travel back to Germany on 31.12.20.
I will bring with me my British passport, my work contract, and my documentation stating I am registered as living and working in Germany.

Your friends daughter should bring a copy of her au pair contract, as well as her documentation stating she is working and living in the country she is travelling back to.

InTheLongGrass · 19/12/2020 20:14

While international travel isnt advised, I believe it is only tier 4 where it is restricted.
I'd go for it, following what looks like very prudent advice from peppita.

Thank you, that’s a pretty clear itinerary. I’ll pass that information on. For other questions, she will be giving her mums address as her residence. Flights are still happening. Her hosts are away for two weeks, and the isolation period is ten days, so she should be ok when they get back.

Thinking the same will happen with Germany too. Christmas away from the family this year for a lot of people, I guess 😞

inquietant · 20/12/2020 15:31

Belgium and Italy too.

Ferry to Hull or Newcastle?
peppita · 20/12/2020 15:43

@BarbarasStripedHands I read all ports will be closed too, but not too sure.

What a mess!

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 20/12/2020 19:47

Sorry it’s flights back to Holland that are suspended. But there’s rumours that they are going to suspend outbound flights too.

She needs to decide whether she wants to spend the next several months here or in the Netherlands. It’s very likely there will be no way to return there if she comes back to the U.K.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 20/12/2020 20:52

I know, I’ve not spoken to them this afternoon, but I know they are both torn.
