Is there formal guidance on this?

If I say I'm doing something local, for me I mean our village. Either way, I wouldn't say further than your nearby town.

Underhisi · 19/12/2020 19:35

Ds goes to school an hour away, respite 90 minutes away and our accessible walks are up to an hour away. Thats our local.

WhiteChocTwix · 19/12/2020 19:40

What counts as local is a great question. We're supposed to go to DM for lunch. She's 10 mins down the road. Was also supposed to visit DF in his care home (same village) for 1st time since the summer. Plans in tatters. I'm gutted, part of me still tempted to go but expect we'll be picking the lunch up from DM and having it at home. Our family has been through so much this year with DF in the care home, we could have all done with just Xmas day.

Gov guidance out

My closest reasonably sized town (so supermarket like Tesco, Aldi, doctor’s surgery and sorting office) is only 5 miles away but now in Tier 4. Next closest town is in my tier but further away - can I still collect my Christmas shopping from my local town, even though it’s in a different tier?

RedskyAtnight · 19/12/2020 20:49

gov.uk guidance says
"If you need to travel you should stay local - meaning avoiding travelling outside of your village, town or the part of a city where you live - and look to reduce the number of journeys you make overall."

HappyChristmasTreeRex · 19/12/2020 21:13

I can only find this bit about travelling for the Christmas bubble.

I can't see the quote from redskyatnight ?? Is that for tier 4??
We are supposed to see family two hours away which I think is not local but arguing with dh as to where the official guidance is on this

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 19/12/2020 21:20

I'm in scotland and in level 4 we were allowed to travel in our own council area but not outside, so technically I could travel about 30 miles to different towns in my council area, but not the 6 miles to the seaside town next to us. Silly really.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 19/12/2020 21:21

We just stuck to the next biggest town over so we could at least get a shopping without remortgaging the house.

LadyLazaruss · 19/12/2020 21:22

Well i'll be driving an hour and a half so 🤷🏻‍♀️.

Coasterfan · 19/12/2020 21:24

I d say within your county? I know Alton Towers Christmas event is only open to locals and they have anecdotally been checking people live within Staffordshire. No idea really though!

Grooticle · 20/12/2020 07:36

But for us we’re right on a county border, so everything “local” is actually the other county. There isn’t any consistent rule on it. I think it’s just “stay as local as possible” and use your judgment about what’s reasonable/safe.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/12/2020 08:45

There isn't any official rule about what counts as 'local' as far as I know.

The village I live in?

My postcode, which also includes a nearby small town?

My council area, which roughly, but not exactly, aligns with my postal city, which caused lots of fun and games when people on the borders were subject to different restrictions to their neighbours.

My county, which is one of the largest in England, which gives me lots of freedom and is listed together as an area for tier purposes?

As far as I like in any direction as long as I stay in Tier 3 (basically all of northern England)?

I am exactly the same. I dont actually do anything in the county where I live. I think we must be the safest people in the country, we only shop/socialise in a low level (Tier 2) but aren't going out because our house happens to be in Tier 4. The next village along from us is split in two Tiers so you can have your left foot in Tier 2 and right in 4... The carols had to be cancelled as they were planned for the wrong side of the village green!
Grooticle · 20/12/2020 10:51

Oh my word! Yes I understand they have to draw the boundary lines somehow, but you do get some funny situations. I have friends whose house is in tier 2 but their garden is in tier 3....
