Tier 4 - International travel?

NoSleepInTheHeat · 19/12/2020 17:24

I can’t find a clear answer anywhere: can we travel out of the country if we are in tier 4? (as long as the other country accepts us!)
We are supposed to take the Eurostar to France on Monday Confused

No, not unless it is for work.

Changedmynameagain1 · 19/12/2020 17:25

Boris said no travel abroad in tier 4 unless for work.

Westnorwood · 19/12/2020 17:25

No unless for work. This was covered in the briefing.

HopeAndDriftWood · 19/12/2020 17:27

The news say no - this is Sky.

I believe tier 4 is a stay at home order, which would make it illegal to break, rather than guidance - hence them using “ordered not to travel abroad”, but I’m not 100% sure yet.

Oh noooooooo

No - work travel only.

habibihabibi · 19/12/2020 17:46

What about the reverse ?
Can people come to London from abroad if there is a travel corridor ? Colleague is working alone here in KSA while spouse and children are London based and planned leave on the 23rd.

Chloemol · 19/12/2020 17:51

No

ivfbeenbusy · 19/12/2020 17:59

Well if you aren't allowed to travel out of your tier it's hardly going to make sense to allow international travel now is it 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Piwlyfbicsly · 19/12/2020 18:14

So what exactly is going to happen with people who booked tickets to go abroad?
I planned to go during Easter but unsure about making plans now (didn’t see family for ages!).
I know a few people with tickets ready to go abroad tomorrow or the day after. What’s happening to them?

OverTheRainbow88 · 19/12/2020 18:15

What about people in tier 2, but flying from London abroad?

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 19/12/2020 18:22

You can't even leave your area if you're in tier 4 never mind the country.

weepingwillow22 · 19/12/2020 18:43

Does anyone know what proof is needed for work travel? My OH is starting a new job in France and needs to travel there before the end of the year in order to get residency.

MadCatEnthusiast · 19/12/2020 18:48

I thought it was "for example: work" as opposed to it being work only being a valid reason? The first lockdown and the November lockdown allowed international travel if they were for the same reasons you'd travel inland like caring for a relative, work or for medical treatment etc.

Wouldnt it be best to check with the operator he's going with rather than rely on guesses? This thread is an example of people not being reliable, onef ththe clearest things BJ said was no international travel apart from allowable reasons yet that message didn't get across.

Are you near Dover? Can he book to drive tonight?
weepingwillow22 · 19/12/2020 18:57

Yes we are checking but unable to get through at the moment. Just wondered if anyone knew in the meantime. As far as I can ascertain essential international travel for work purposes is still allowed in tier 4.

What are the allowable reasons though? Education and work, but otherwise? What if you are moving, or visiting a dying relative?

@NoSleepInTheHeat
Travel internationally allowed for:
Work
Caring responsibilities
Transit through Tier 4 is allowed too.
The question is how will they enforce that. Will airports ask people to provide proof of work etc.

catsjammies · 19/12/2020 20:34

There are certain exempt countries you are allowed to travel to, I don't believe France is one of them.

LunarSea · 19/12/2020 21:33

So we are tier 3. Can I still pick a family member up returning from abroad (tested before travelling, isolating on return) from an airport in tier 4 if I don't leave the car - just drive in, pick up from car park, and out again, so zero contact while in tier 4? It isn't clear. Transit through tier 4 seems to be allowed, but by public transport that would surely be more risky than socially distanced/zero contact collection.

londonsbmum · 21/12/2020 00:47

Anyone get news from people leaving today - were there any checks enforced at airport or train station ... especially for parents travelling with kids?

MrsPernicious · 21/12/2020 00:51

I think you will find the Eurostar is not running on Monday.

Enidblyton1 · 21/12/2020 00:51

Sadly you’re not allowed to go to France OP.
However, if you were only going for a holiday I wouldn’t feel too disappointed. France is no place for a holiday right now.

TheBlessedCheesemaker · 21/12/2020 00:52

Last lockdown allowed for travel for childcare/shared custody, work, medical reasons and to view/buy/sell/
prepare to market properties (even if abroad). But not for holiday if you are in tier4.
