A Bit of a Confusing Isolation Question

So our daughter (3 years old) came down with a croup type cough and runny nose on the 7th Dec. We took her for a test on the 8th. On the 9th we got a negative test result. Childcare said she could come back with the negative test result. So she went back on the 10th. Another child had a cough on the 12th and also got a negative test result.

On the 15th another child got a cough and had a positive test result. As the child was in childcare the day before (14th) everyone in has to isolate until midnight 24th.

We went for another test for our daughter yesterday as she still has this cough (no other symptoms at all) and worried we tested too early or may have had a false negative. We await the results of this now.

So my daughter will isolate until the 24th at midnight no problem. We can still go out of the house as we had no contact with the child. If the test comes back positive though when would the isolation period start from? Cos if it was 14 days for us from when her symptoms started that will be up on Monday. Or would it be 14 days from the last contact with this child at nursery for us?

We have cancelled all our Xmas plans, but were hoping to see my mum who is in our support bubble the Wednesday after Xmas (30th Dec) and have Xmas lunch that day.

Its hurting my brain trying to work out when we will have to isolate from.

If your daughter has symptoms (cough) then you also have to isolate surely?

BeckyWithTheGoodHair5629456 · 17/12/2020 21:01

And in answer to your question it's until 24th, 10 days after the other child in nursery had a positive test. If your daughter tests negative, she still has to isolate until 24th.

We are currently isolating until we get the results of her second test yesterday. If this is negative it is nice and easy and we will keep her in until the 24th. One of us can go for shopping etc.....

If its positive its difficult as we won't have any food shopping next week, and we wanted to know when we would have to isolate too as close contacts of our daughter. Is it 14 days from when she had contact with the child in childcare or is it longer? We don't want to say its from when she first got symptoms as that's over 1.5 weeks already.

It's 10 days isolation now, not 14. I would take it as 10 days isolation from the date of the test for all of you if it is positive as you don't know exactly when the symptoms would have stopped being cough and turned to covid.

Thisisneverending · 17/12/2020 21:07

It’s recently changed to 10 days isolation. It would be 10 days from last contact with positive case. The day she last had contact is day 0 - so 10 full days after that.
For everyone in the house it would be 10 days following your daughters positive test (if she has a positive).

Thank you @dementedpixie and @Thisisneverending thats great. I did wonder if it would be easier to go from date of test as we have isolated from yesterday. Just trying to have a nice Christmas with my mum and it would seem the Wednesday may be possible as that would be 2 weeks from date of test.

Fingers crossed it all works out for you!

But it is now 10 days from the start of isolation, so starting yesterday would leave you free to stop isolating on boxing Day I think?

BeckyWithTheGoodHair5629456 · 17/12/2020 21:29

It's 10 days from the point at which there has been confirmed contact with a positive case. The day that the other child who got a positive test had contact with your daughter was 14th. So her last day of isolation is the 24th, whether or not she tests negative. If she does test positive you're all isolating until 24th with her. Hope she gets a negative test so you can get stuff sorted next week!

Unless one of you develops symptoms during that time, mind. If she's positive and you get symptoms you restart the isolation

ramblingsonthego · 17/12/2020 21:35

Thank you everyone. I think to be safe IF we get a positive from her we will isolate till boxing day and pray that someone will take pity on us and drop some food around! The worst week to ask someone but we only need fresh things like bread and milk so wouldn't be a lot, we would give up on any treats for xmas! Obviously if subsequently we get symptoms we will start the 10 days again.

I am hoping we can see my mum on the 30th and have a big Xmas dinner that day. It will give me a chance to go shopping on the Tuesday to get everything.

Fingers crossed for you. If your in east herts I'd be happy to drop you some shopping!

We got a negative test for our daughter so thank god it means we can go out and get food. She will isolate till Xmas eve and then hopefully we can see my mum the following week.
