Terminally ill relative and utter confusion over Covid rules

Hello,

So I was wondering if anyone could help as I’ve gotten lost in all the rule changes. My auntie is terminally ill, and if a bed becomes available is about to be moved to a hospice. Apparently she old has weeks left to live. My mother, who my Auntie currently lives with, is a carer for my father who is in the later stage of Alzheimer’s, and he can’t be left alone for a prolonged period of time (more than an hour or two).

To cut a long story short, I need to go and help my Mum care for my Dad (and Auntie if she can’t get a place in a hospice) but in order to do so I have to quarantine first.

How long do I need to quarantine for? Is it 14 or 10 days? I’m beyond exasperated by all the rule changes. I have no idea what I’m meant to be doing. Argh.

Thanks for reading and any replies.

Are you quarantining because you would feel safer ? Because surely you are helping a vunerable person so that is allowed without quarantine ?

Could you afford a private test if that would make you feel better ?

Unsure33 - Apologies for my ignorance, if I paid for a private test would I then not have to isolate?

I’m quarantining as a precaution, just incase I have it and didn’t know.

You can be tested if requested. Is there a hcp involved who could advise you to?

KeysDontBelongInTheFridge · 16/12/2020 20:39

That’s a really good point, thanks LIZS. There are numerous hcp’s involved so will get my Mum to have a chat and see the best course of action.

Thanks, that’s a brilliant suggestion.

Apparently the 14 day isolation was cut to 10 days because only 2% of infections were passed on after the 10 day mark. So 14 days is safer than 10 days but only by a very little margin.
