Today was the first time in a large supermarket since March. I rarely go to Aldi but I do like some of their products at Christmas time so thought it will be quiet will nip in and get them.
This poor woman had a hacking cough and was coughing all round the supermarket. Not just once but constantly Needless to say didn’t stay long. Will be giving it a miss for a while
I would have been too embarrassed to go with a cough like that as would be convinced everyone was looking at me

My husband has bronchiectasis, copd and asthma. He's always had an impressive and loud scary cough.
We have always avoided crowded places like bars, theatres etc as a normal virus can put him in hospital on oxygen for several days. He's had sepsis three times.
Even before covid he occasionally had filthy looks and rude comments. When he coughs now peoples reactions are much worse. Luckily he's a bit deaf so doesn't always hear the comments😆
We can fully understand that his cough frightens people so he does his best not too cough loudly. He avoids shops etc but even out in the countryside his cough is that loud it spooks people from quite a distance.
Not sure what the answer is really. As a family we're all used to it, but before covid he could silence a room with a loud coughing fit. He found it very embarrassing.

You know loads of people have asymptomatic COVID? I had no symptoms at all, felt perfectly well and went about to lots of places before I got my test result. So you'd have been glaring at hacking cough woman who is probably just a heavy smoker whereas infected contagious me would've silently glided past you 🦠😷

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 16/12/2020 18:56

just noted how a once normal occurrence could make you feel ill at ease

Well thats not quite true

If you’d said this youd have had a lot agreeing with you

StanfordPines · 16/12/2020 19:02

I get asthma which makes me cough. It’s worse when I go from the cold into somewhere warm.

I wasn’t aware that I should be so embarrassed about it that I should stay in my house and starve.

StanfordPines · 16/12/2020 19:03

@rosie1959

And I am not judgemental at all just pointed out it made me uneasy
Yes you are. You judged her for coming out when you think she should have been embarrassed and stayed at home.
scottish83 · 16/12/2020 19:04

Part of the problem here is that there are many people who develop a new continuous cough, they get tested and find out it's not COVID-19, and then discover that the Government and public health messaging tells them that they're actually allowed to go out and infect people with whatever other respiratory condition they have.

Stupidity at its finest.

Don’t need posters to agree with me this was not in AIBU Far too long in the tooth to need everyone to have the same point of view or feelings

I am now over three weeks since testing positive for covid. I am back at work. But this cough is persistent. I stayed in isolation for 16 days but eventually have had to go back out.

But that also shows that people who are coughing for whatever reasons, even long term pre existing conditions, could also unknowingly have Covid. Because they are coughing they will be much more infectious, propelling more virus particles much more forcefully and for a greater distance. Nobody can know that their cough isn’t spreading covid.

What do you suggest we do then, never leave the house just in case?

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/12/2020 19:28

I cough because I smoke, wear a mask and get tested weekly (job related)

Try keeping a cough in is hard to do.

Lovemusic33 · 16/12/2020 19:35

It’s cold season, lots of people have coughs, chances are she’s been tested and got the all clear. I hate going to the supermarket at the moment too, I went to Aldi on Monday and someone had a go at someone else for standing in the wrong place at the checkout.

Hardbackwriter · 16/12/2020 19:39

The ONS put out a study today that said that 10% of people who do have covid-19 still have a cough 5 weeks later. Are they supposed to still be in their houses then, OP?

Funkypolar · 16/12/2020 19:41

If you’re wearing your mask and washing your hands you’ll be fine OP, right?

RaspberryCoulis · 16/12/2020 19:42

@huuuuunnnndderrricks

I don't understand why people with hacking coughs go out at the moment ! I had a cough a few weeks ago and stayed in til it had stopped .. if someone has copd then surely they are high risk and shouldn't be in a supermarket !
How would you suggest they get their shopping then? Send a letter up the chimney to Santa? Hmm
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/12/2020 19:42

I cough due to chronic sinus issues - wearing a mask seems to make it worse. I try not to go out much, but my friends and people like eg my hairdresser know what the cough is.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 16/12/2020 19:43

Not quite what i meant rosie but I obviously wasnt clear 🙂

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 16/12/2020 20:00

I had a cough for this will be the 8th week . I knew it wasn’t COVID , got tested around the 3rd or4th week tested negative
Ended up with an inhaler , it was a chest infection
I have barely coughed today , fingers crossed
I don’t get sick pay so can’t possibly be off for 8 weeks , SMP isn’t enough
Daughter ended up with a cough , I knew she had caught my cold , the school sent her home , again she was tested on insistence form the school, she wasn’t allowed back until tested , she was negative , I got tested again , negative
I refuse to waste more tests unless I am convinced I have COVID
I am pretty sure I had it in March , was soooooooo ill
I always get a cold this time a year which inevitably leads to a chest infection
She might just have a cold 🤧, people are very clued up now about COVID

Sweettea1 · 16/12/2020 20:04

I had a terrible cough last week tested negative! should I of stayed home let the kids starve just because people like you don't like coughing people yes you might be afraid but surely these people will have been tested b4 going out. Its winter you got to accept people will get coughs and colds there is more illness than covid maybe you shouldn't go out instead of people with a cold not going out!

Stellaris22 · 16/12/2020 20:09

I have cough variant asthma and that results in a noisy hacking cough.

It doesn't just last a few days, I'll have it for weeks and it's horrible. No sleep, no rest, lots of pain.

Try to be more sympathetic of people with coughs, believe it or not, we are very much aware that we are coughing.

MrsMomoa · 16/12/2020 20:15

Why don't the Covid paranoid just stay home then? And let us reasonable folk go about our business in peace and without judgement?

Some people would never be able to go.out if they had to wait until they stopped coughing. Maybe they needed, well you know, food and had already tested negative, or were in the stage of recovery from.covid where they are no longer infectious but still coughing. Some people cough for weeks after a simple cold.
