Has anyone with psoriasis, who is not on immunosuppressants had Covid?

Just wondering how you faired?
I was reading that one of the genes associated with severe Covid seems linked to psoriasis in some way

Where did you read that? I have psoriasis

Ninbuscl · 16/12/2020 16:25

If you search 5 genes associated with severe Covid there is an article in the scientist. I am not entirely sure if I am understanding it correctly though. Sorry not meaning to worry anyone

It’s to do with the cytokine effect. But I am wondering if being on immunosuppressants would actually prevent severe covid

Now you have me worried too, let's wait for someone to come along with some soothing and reassuring reason why we are not to worry (feel it is quite enough of a shit without that too - both ds and I suffer, dd fine).

danni0509 · 16/12/2020 16:33

Psoriasis sufferer here. Not on any immunosuppressants.

No covid yet but have in the past read similar to what you posted.

One thing I will say, when I get ill (just standard stuff, tonsillitis etc) i flare up psoriasis big time, last year 80% of my body was covered in guttate psoriasis which took nearly a year to go away just from a few days of tonsillitis. I have the scars from it, I dread getting poorly.

I think people think oh psoriasis it’s just a skin condition! It is, but it’s much more than that.

Roystonv · 16/12/2020 16:42

How interesting danni, whilst my mental health is not good and I have had surgery I have been very well for years so wonder if mine would do the same.

Ninbuscl · 16/12/2020 16:44

Yes I was hoping for some people with psoriasis coming along to say they were fine or asymptomatic

LimpidPools · 16/12/2020 16:45

Well this is alarming.

Ninbuscl · 16/12/2020 16:46

Sorry! I was reading between the lines of the articles. There has not actually been any article which has stated that psoriasis is a risk factor. We haven’t been out in vulnerable group

*put in vulnerable group

I haven't had COVID to my knowledge but I did fill in a questionnaire somewhere put together by a scientist which assessed your risk of being seriously unwell with COVID and asked about psoriasis. I fiddled around with the form and psoriasis didn't seem to affect my score much - my weight was a bigger factor.

I have found that in general I rarely get ill. In fact, my kids, who are 11 and 13 now, have never known me need more than a half day in bed and they've never known me have a fever. I have always assumed this was the one up-side of having psoriasis, which is effectively your immune system going haywire. I'm hoping this holds true for COVID and doesn't lead to cytokine storms but I haven't read anything definitive.

That said, we are not on The List, which has to be positive, right?

Seenoevil33 · 16/12/2020 16:48

I have psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis and am on immunosuppressants (methotrexate and Humira). Was advised it was extremely important to stay on these as covid could cause my immune system to go into overdrive, effectively cytokine.

Ninbuscl · 16/12/2020 16:49

Yes this is what worries me for seenoevil- for the people just using creams and not on immunosuppressants

OP posts:
bathsh3ba · 16/12/2020 16:51

@ninbuscl but to flip that around, generally immunosuppressants are only given to people with severe psoriasis. I saw a dermatologist about it and mine wasn't severe enough. Presumably the more severe the psoriasis the greater the risk of cytokine storm as well - so the risk for psoriasis which is not severe may well be a lot lower.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 16/12/2020 16:54

Oh ffs really!! Sad

Pootle40 · 16/12/2020 17:14

I can't say I had it for sure but I have had psoriasis (requiring annual light therapy) for 20+ years. I thought I had COVID at end of October. I had terrible chills, body aches, sore head, sore eyes, pathetic cough, metallic taste in my mouth. Felt really crap for two days and within 5/6 days was ok. I never had a temperature (although was maybe warmer for me); cough wasn't a big deal at all and I didn't lose taste or smell. But I can honestly say I've not had those symptoms before without it becoming a cold if you know what I mean. Also at exactly the same time two girls I know had exactly the same symptoms and tested positive.

Pootle40 · 16/12/2020 17:16

I hadn't been in contact with a know COVID case but this did happen a few days after travelling by train into a large city, going for a massage, round shops and staying in a hotel so........

Ninbuscl · 16/12/2020 17:19

Thanks pootle

Following as DH suffers from really bad Psoriasis.

skininthegame · 16/12/2020 17:39

I have psoriasis and on topical creams only.
I've had Covid, not confirmed by test but GP convinced.
I wasn't seriously ill at the time but am still feeling the effects many months later.
I'd be interested to learn more about the potential links.

Ninbuscl · 16/12/2020 17:41

It worries me a bit that the potential for serious effects could have been overlooked as psoriasis seems like such an unrelated skin condition and not something you would normally associate with sever respiratory disease.

OP posts:
tinkywinkyshandbag · 16/12/2020 17:48

Well I'm asthmatic, fat and gave psoriasis so if I get it that's not looking good.

ChloeDeckTheHalls · 16/12/2020 17:48

Yes. I have just recovered from it. My only symptoms was hive like rash on the backs of my hands, wrists and past my elbows. My face felt like it had bad sunburn which hurt and I wasn’t itchy for about 10 days. I’m also allergic to penicillin and get hives with that but not sure ignore linked. Skin is slowly starting to get back to normal.
My psoriasis plaques have been unaffected.

ChloeDeckTheHalls · 16/12/2020 17:49

*was itchy

Ninbuscl · 16/12/2020 17:50

Ah that’s reassuring Chloe 🙂
