I was wondering whether to do this when mil is round, in between stuffing my mouth with food and drink.

Yes. If there's any chance you have been exposed to the virus, I would say yes, especially if she is any way vulnerable. I do this routinely to be honest but I'm a secondary teacher aka plague rat.

Xmas Hmm Who could bother...

I absolutely would, bitter experience.

I was at my parents house on Sunday (in the garden) for the first time since the second lockdown and then woke up with a cough on Monday. I wasn’t expecting it but tested positive. I really wish I’d worn a mask. We all have to isolate until at least Christmas Day (assuming no one else gets symptoms).

Unless you have been isolating for two weeks prior there’s always a chance you’ve caught it despite precautions. From now on I’ll be wearing a mask whenever I see anyone, even if outside.

I am thinking we will have the huge windows open while eating and then retreat to the warmth of the lounge and wear masks (dmil is in 80s and has only seen dh inside since early in the year, we have secondary age dc and I am nhs).
