Travelling over Xmas - wwyd?

tenlittlecygnets · 16/12/2020 14:02

We live in Home Counties. Planning to drive to north Scotland to a region that's just gone into tier 3 for Christmas. 500 miles.

We had planned to go 21-28 Dec - have booked holiday house. But now we can't travel outside 23-27 Dec. I'm worried that roads will be gridlocked.

We will drive 10 hours each way to stay for 3 days. Would have to find supermarket when we get there on 23rd.

DD's school has had 20 cases of Covid confirmed over the last week - she is now off. I'm not sending her back in.

Wwyd?? I want to see my family but is it madness travelling all that way to see them outside for a few days?? I really don't want to risk bringing Covid to them, but I don't want them to think we're being selfish for not going, as I know they will be disappointed if we change our plans.

Back when we booked, numbers weren't too high and it didn't seem too risky. Now it's different. Help!

sounds like madness to me! And Scotland restrictions like to increase anyway. Just one day, just one christmas, just one year.

DownWhichOfLate · 16/12/2020 14:37

Can you cancel and get a refund? Sounds like a lot of effort for minimal gain.

RedToothBrush · 16/12/2020 14:39

Why on earth would you do that still?

Do you really think they will think you are being selfish for saying its a 10 hour journey on hellish roads and btw there's a massive outbreak at my daughters school?

Seriously, why would you want to see anyone who thought you were being selfish?

usernotfound0000 · 16/12/2020 14:41

I wouldn't do it. It doesn't sound like a whole lot of fun regardless of covid.

tenlittlecygnets · 16/12/2020 14:42

Thanks.

I just feel guilty. My mum has put a lot of effort in cooking and doing food... I haven't seen them since February and I wanted to see them now. Gah.

I think it would be incredibly selfish. Hasn't NS just come out with no overnight stays for people in Scotland, never mind people travelling up from England. I thought the border was effectively closed apart from essential travel.

Mousehole10 · 16/12/2020 15:18

Quite honestly no I wouldn’t. It sound awful, so much travelling for just a few days and having to be outside in the cold. Surely won’t be much fun for your dd?

tenlittlecygnets · 16/12/2020 15:18

@helloxhristmas - the border won't be shut over 23-27 December!

Sturgeon has advised no overnight stays, and only seeing people one day out of the five, but it's not law. I wish they'd just make it law then everyone would know where they stood!

The kids are 14 and 18 so not tiny...

I am not dismissing the disappointment the decision would cause on both sides but no I would not do this.

I think you know really that it is a bit silly to press on regardless with all the things you have said in your post.

Your Mum will be upset at first but she will understand won't she? Eventually?

Stillgoings · 16/12/2020 15:30

We are in a similar position and we are not going. We are all very disappointed but dont want to risk taking it with us

GreenClock · 16/12/2020 15:34

Ah, I really feel for you OP. You must be longing to see them. But travelling up there would be the wrong thing to do.

Calmandmeasured1 · 16/12/2020 16:02

The laws for 23 -27 December are still remaining as previously announced. However, Nicola Sturgeon has issued more stringent guidelines. She only wants people to visit for one day and not stay overnight unless it is unavoidable.

Personally, I would have to let my parents be disappointed. I think the roads will still be gridlocked as there are many people who lack common senses and morals.

tenlittlecygnets · 17/12/2020 16:47

Well, now we're in tier 3 so no travelling. Fuck 2020.

OP posts:
justgeton · 17/12/2020 16:50

The plan was madness when you made it imo and now it's against all guidelines

Don't

snookercue · 17/12/2020 16:50

@tenlittlecygnets

Well, now we're in tier 3 so no travelling. Fuck 2020.

So now you are in tier 3 and not allowed to travel you won't but you were not willing to respect the 'do not travel into a level 3 area' law in Scotland

emmathedilemma · 17/12/2020 17:28

I'm be going the other way from Scotland level (not tier!) 3 to England tier 3 area 23rd - 27th but i've not got as far to travel as you. I couldn't drive all that way for 3 days there. I've pretty much self isolated since Sunday (apart from popping in a couple of shops to collect orders) and my parents won't have been anywhere.

That's SNP bollocks.

They'd like to close the border and keep all you nasty, germy, English people out. But back in the real world, they don't have the power, and people don't want it.

Queen Covid has RECOMMENDED no overnight stays but she recommends a lot of things, most of us take it with a massive pinch of salt. It is not illegal to travel to Scotland. It is not illegal to travel out of Scotland into England.

Oh and as for the "terrible roads" - we have tarmac, roundabouts and traffic lights up here. There's even a motorway or two.

Only you can decide OP whether you're up for making a trek north for a short period.

tenlittlecygnets · 17/12/2020 22:30

@snookercue - eh?? I said

We had planned to go 21-28 Dec - have booked holiday house. But now [that the area is level 3] we can't travel outside 23-27 Dec.

I never suggested breaking level 3 rules. See my op.

The Christmas exemption doesn't include travelling into level 3 to stay in a 'holiday home'

tenlittlecygnets · 17/12/2020 22:40

@snookercue - I've just checked. You're right. It doesn't. I hadn't even checked that. Oops! Thanks for pointing that out.
