Will you be cancelling your Christmas plans?

With the impending news that the govt may do a U-turn on the relaxation of the rules over Christmas, will you be cancelling whatever you may have had planned with family and friends?!

I only ask as I’ve seen so many people posting on social media that there’s no chance they are cancelling now, this close to Christmas.

I must be in close contact with hundreds of people everyday due to my job, I travel from region to region- tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3. It just seems unreasonable that I might not be allowed to spend a day with a couple family members who are also out and about for work everyday.

This! This is what has killed me more than anything. People have become horrible, judgemental creatures, completely lacking in empathy, obsessed with an idea collective misery, full of hatred for anyone who dares to try make themselves happy.

But its not just this though. I don't want people to be unhappy at Xmas and there are some people who I really hope spend Xmas with their family, as I think the risk of not doing so is bigger than the risk of Covid.

But the actions that each and every one of us take doesn't just impact our families / friends.

Unless you chose to spend the day with family and then not leave the house for a couple of weeks you are increasing the risk of those around you (who may have spent Christmas alone).

Most likely you won't catch the virus, but you could. You may then pass it on to others.

It’s not sucking the joy - it’s about having basic consideration for the thoughts and feelings of others.

justgeton · 18/12/2020 13:54

@earnshaw47

just me and my hubby, hope to see family via zoom , different of course we will be using zoom to interact with family, I would not like Boris`s job one little bit , so so stressful , damned if he does and damned if he doesn`t , we must take part of the blame at least , if we had all done the social distancing and mask wearing then i really believe the virus would have been on the way out, too many selfish folks i`m afraid
Completely agree.

This is being dragged out longer than necessary because so many people think they know better and are utterly selfish.

Wrecktal · 18/12/2020 13:55

@Covidnomore I completely agree with you

Wrecktal · 18/12/2020 13:56

If Labour were in power, we would no doubt be in full lockdown over Xmas - and I’m wondering if this may actually be a better scenario.

LadyLazaruss · 18/12/2020 13:57

@Wrecktal

How can 2 posts saying ‘ I can’t wait for Christmas’ deemed as anything other than self centred in an open forum where people have literally just posted about the sacrifices they’ve made? If you had a conversation with someone who said “I’m alone this Christmas” would you reply “I can’t wait - I’m having my whole family over”.
Dunno, didn't realise in order to post about Christmas we all had to have the same opinion as you. Smile

@MummaBear4321

Unreal how judgemental and righteous some people have become throughout this pandemic

This. With christmas bells on.

No I wouldn’t

But on an open thread asking whether people are changing plans it doesn’t seem unreasonable

So on a are you ‘looking forward to mothers day’ you will get a variety from

Omg so excited to spend mothers day with my mum

To

No I’m very sad as mothers days just aren’t the same without my mum

Don't worry, i'll sleep well knowing i'm abiding by the three household rule that the Government has allowed, and that millions will be taking advantage of. Happy to be seeing my mother who was crying down the phone to me yesterday.

Have a very merry Christmas!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 18/12/2020 14:14

And i dont think you are sucking the Joy wrecktal

Not at all 💐

Wrecktal · 18/12/2020 14:18

@LadyLazaruss Yep I’ll think of you all - while I’ll be isolating from my dear mum who will be alone, recovering from her cancer operation, self isolating and desperately in need of NHS care. I hope all your sociable Christmas’s mean that she’ll get the hospital bed she needs.

That's very sad, and I do feel for you and your mother, but that's nothing to do with other people.

You leapt at me straight away, basically insinuating I was breaking the rules just because I do have plans - bit rude. I didn't realise you couldn't be positive on this thread - I was just commenting. Didn't even read the whole thread.

I don't think it makes me a selfish person to spend Christmas with my mother when it's been allowed, and why should I be made to feel guilty about it? Why should anyone that are seeing other people?

DominaShantotto · 18/12/2020 14:34

Not changing plans. Spending it with my parents- like we are allowed to do (we will ensure we don’t play any of those terrifying board games) and am not feeling guilty at all about it- the isolation has had a terrible effect on my mum and I’m prioritising my family and our collective mental health now.

You stay at home with Mrs Browns Boys got company if you want - but personal attacks on posters doing something they’re allowed to do isn’t on - and will not achieve anything.

Wrecktal · 18/12/2020 14:36

@LadyLazaruss I’m sorry - I probably feel too emotional about it all, so yes - I did jump. If guidelines are being followed it’s fine, and of course I want everyone to have the best Xmas they can. I just see so many people flouting, and every time I think - do they realise the full impact of their actions? Do they realise the strain the NHS are under. Her surgeon was just completely, and utterly amazing. She saved mums life. The hospital announced it was a critical level last week, and she has another major operation due in Feb. They are hero’s, total hero’s - and I want to do my very best to support the community. You’re not selfish - of course you’re not. I’m sorry, as I do hope you have a great Xmas xx

Thank you. I've asked MN to remove one of my earlier comments - I was out of order and on the defence.

I wish your mother all the best and I didn't comment on here to cause any offence. Have the best day you can. I'm sorry again.

MercyBooth · 18/12/2020 15:24

I’m afraid I see a lot of people blaming others without taking personal responsibility for their actions. We need to start looking a bit deeper within ourselves, how this pandemic is our fault - our over consumerism has led to a loss of biodiversity/ecosystems/humans interacting more with animals

@Wrecktal I havent been abroad since 1986 and that was a school trip.

Your Zoom suggestions are all very well for those who can afford the technology but many on my housing estate cant. And are sick of all the emotional blackmail we are being put through over Christmas when that didnt happen with the ski trips or summer holidays. Many ppl i know have NEVER been abroad at all and are really bloody angry at being guilt tripped and emotionally blackmailed for visiting relatives (some within walking distance) while others are jetting off to the Maldives or Dubai while Government scientists and media dont say a fucking word about that. The media have played this really really badly particularly the left wing media im sad to say.

My DM has been struggling to get treatment since January 2016 for the ailments caused by fifty years of working in poultry factories. Worked solidly from 1960 to Xmas 2015 apart from 3 months off in 73 when she had me and same in 75 when she had DB
and 9 months of unemployment in 81.
She has problems which cause her pain in her legs, circulation problems is partially deaf and loud noises in her head. Our GP surgery has been too impatient with her , fobbed her off (shes partially deaf and English isnt her first language) because its been left for so long she needs help with things like cooking. So yes i will be seeing my mum at Christmas But she only lives a half hour walk up the road so im not leaving my home town.

Another thing i keep hearing is how young people really need to stay away from elderly relatives. My parents are 84. My 25 year old niece lives with them and works on school transport. A lot of the rules and advice comes from a place of privilege.

Chaotic45 · 18/12/2020 15:27

Hats off to you ladies for the olive branches.

Emotions are running so high for so many people atm, there are numerous equally valid POV, and no right or wrong answers.

My DH tested positive on Tuesday so we are locked down until Boxing Day, I'm so worried for him and it makes it even harder knowing that our local hospital is already overrun- what if he gets really unwell?

He's locked away in the bedroom, I haven't done my Christmas shopping and so Christmas is pretty much cancelled here. Except that I have to make some sort of effort for DC.

My 75 year old dad who lives alone and is vulnerable now has no one to visit him (we were doing this outside) , no one to cook him a Christmas meal, and I can't even take him his present. Even more worryingly his pacemaker battery change op has been cancelled and he's just had a diagnosis of malignant melanoma and needs an excision which has also been cancelled.

So, looking thorough my lense things look bleak and I'm very worried about the knock on effects of Christmas on people's lives and NHS capacity.

MercyBooth · 18/12/2020 15:33

@Chaotic45 Hope your DH recovers quickly. And sorry about your dads situation too Flowers

Chaotic45 · 18/12/2020 15:37

Thanks @MercyBooth that's very kind of you.

Ineedaduvetday · 19/12/2020 05:53

I think some frustration comes from the fact that people are seeing family because they can.

They are so happy they could see their family, some haven't considered whether they should.

MimiDaisy11 · 21/12/2020 14:12

I don't have a car and with no public transport on Christmas day I can't go for just one day. It never stops sucking to be poor LOL.

Now I have to plan and cook my first Christmas dinner. Should be interesting. At least I'm not alone. I feel for the people that suddenly find themselves alone.
