Anyone else have conspiracy theory family?

I have family members who think covid is all just a conspiracy theory, the vaccine is to make politicians money as they have shares in Pfizer etc, the vaccine will have a tracker in it, or the best yet - the vaccine has something in it that will kill off the elderly as it's all about population control Hmm.

I just can't deal with them. Also they think the new strain has a convenient time to be found and can be used as an excuse to cancel Christmas.

Tbh I'm worried about the cases rising, I've barely been out the last few days and have massively minimised contacts to try and keep my family safe at Christmas. I'm worried about the long term impact of other healthcare issues - my hospital has already cancelled most outpatient appointments and we were already at breaking point before they cancelled them in terms of waiting list times.

How do you deal with conspiracy theory family members?

I do find myself wondering if you would ever be so reductive and glib with regard to the beliefs of a Muslim or a Jew?

And also whether MN would tolerate you doing so.

I grew up Catholic. I also campaigned for the legalisation of abortion in my home country, because theology cannot impinge on the right of women to determine what takes place in their own body. Your own take on the situation is far more reductive and glib.

And you appear to be taking issue with the stated position of your own church leaders:

@Haffiana @Pantheon @BlueBlancmange

Do you realise that you come across as fanatic as those you call 'fanatics'?

Also, like a religious fanatic, they feel compelled to spread the word to try to convert people

I've seen a lot of Covid vaccination fanatics on these threads trying to bring people round to the 'acceptable' way of thinking. Their narrative is cult-like, and often not making much sense either.

Have you read the 'Had vaccine today...' thread?

trulydelicious · 16/12/2020 13:33

@ZednotZee

I'm Catholic and won't be taking the vaccine if it is proven to have been developed using aborted foetal cell lines

Leaving religion aside, I will personally not be taking the Pfizer vaccine (as it's based on new technology) or the others as there is no information on delayed onset side effects.

However, it's not clear to me regarding the Pfizer vaccine whether foetal cells are used.

The active substance is 'BNT162b2 RNA' as per the list of ingredients here

www.gov.uk/government/publications/regulatory-approval-of-pfizer-biontech-vaccine-for-covid-19/information-for-uk-recipients-on-pfizerbiontech-covid-19-vaccine

I don't know exactly how this ingredient is produced (i.e. what substance they start with in order to synthesize it)

Nah. No cigar, love. You have a belief system that makes you feel special, that is all.

I believe in freedom to worship whatever you want without fear of discrimination, but don't try to make out that it is a result of rational - or indeed any form of - thought.

NotAKaren · 16/12/2020 16:18

And further, just like a religious fanatic, they believe that they are 'special' and 'chosen' because they can See the Truth and everyone else is blind.

This is so true, my family member has really grasped this like a personal crusade to convert all of us to their way of thinking. It's as if we all change our mind everything will then be magically back to normal. I am perfectly happy for them to think whatever they wants but I really do not want to be bombarded with this stuff on a daily basis. I also don't want them to be anywhere near my elderly parents upsetting them with this stuff.
@moonsbury any suggestions for even more ridiculous covid theories? Although they'd probably take it seriously...
How about the elites created Covid & the vaccines that prevent it in order to kill off the anti vaxers.

ZednotZee · 16/12/2020 21:31

Nore

The stated position of my church leaders is as nothing to me, they colluded in mass paedophilia.
The Catholic Church is infiltrated with evil and I take my moral stance from scripture, rather than the dictats of modern day men.

Growing up Catholic is, as I'm sure you are aware different to being a practising Catholic.
Your views on the validity of abortion are irrelevant to my morality. As I'm sure you can appreciate I believe that life begins at conception and that a foetus has a soul, therefore it is anathema to me to be involved in the process or products of abortion in any way.

Having said that, I do not condemn the sinner, simply the sin and I have never lobbied against abortion for others. My faith is my own personal choice and as such I do not now, nor have I ever wished to enforce my morals upon others. I believe, as God intended me to, in our free will.

I appreciate this isn't a religious discussion but it is hardly a hot topic on the board and so I do hope that nobody will view my post as deliberate derailment.

What is this comment supposed to mean?

@Nore oh bugger off you miserable sod. Always one lurkio on these threads that's ready and waiting to start an argument. Get a hobby!

Well, if they believed this conspiracy they would have to have the vaccine in order not to be a victim of the conspiracy, that is the twist.

Aprilrainbow · 17/12/2020 22:49

You cannot counter blind faith with reason, every time the government or BBC tries to counter or fact check conspiracies that is taken as proof of the elites covering up, the best thing to do is to come up with ever more ridiculous conspiracies in the hope that one day they will realise that they have been had.

Pinkcadillac · 18/12/2020 16:03

A close family member believes all the conspiracy theories. She spoils the family chat with her weird Facebook posts and manages to upset the rest of us quite a lot. It is very distressing.

No one ca argue with her because she gets upset and a little aggressive. My mum is very worried, so are her children (all young adults). Her DH is at the end of his tether, and I don't blame him Sad

StarCat2020 · 18/12/2020 18:38

Why does anyone think they are important enough that anyone would be interested in tracking them with microchips?

Also, most people don't go anywhere without their phones so why would the microchips be necessary?

Aprilrainbow · 18/12/2020 19:39

Self powered micro chips small enough to be slipped into a vaccine are way beyond our technology, "I knew it, it's them aliens".
