Will they divide up counties now for Tiers? This is what they’ve done in Hertfordshire and Essex

So they didn’t divide up counties much when they assign tiers last time. But now I’ve seen that only parts of Essex and Hertfordshire are moving to tier 3...does that mean there is hope for us that live in low Covid areas that have been lumped in to tier 3 because we are in an overall county with high rate?

I hope so. I am in a greater manchester borough with low rates but last time we were all put in tier 3 because of 2/3 boroughs with very high rates. Media is suggesting they won't quite go borough by borough but might split GM in two because the the high rate boroughs are all in the top half.

A bit of a joke because we're half a mile from the county border - the other side they are tier 2 but their rates are significantly higher.

I don’t know how that would work unless they do road blocks etc to stop people moving between tiers?

I am in a county which is still tier 2 but in a part of it that really should be tier 3 as numbers are rising very rapidly (certainly on London levels) . However people could easily hop from one part to the next!

@Kazmerelda
surely that is the case wherever you have a border. I live half a mile from the tier 2/3 border and there's never been any roadblocks. Tier 3 people are not advised to go to tier 2 but it's not against the law and a significant people have to for work/school anyway.

Oh do you mean because people might not know what tier they are in? Yes you probably have a point hence it needs to be at least local authority level - In essex, kent, london and GM there are two tier authorities so this is relatively easy to do. But splitting up unitary authorities is hard, admittedly

Exactly that Smile where I am, we are right in the middle of several different towns surrounding us who are all low but we are high (trying to be vague on area lol). You are also absolutely right re schools and work as lots of people come here for both.

Its leaked that parts of Leicestershire & Lincolnshire will be hived off (I forget exactly which bits! Sorry!) despite continuing high or highish rates in those counties' main ities. I agree within reason TBH. I think compliance is a finite resource we need to husband carefully and people will comply more if they feel restrictions are fair for their local area. Also the wider impact of Tier 3 is bloody horrible.

Also the government will need a majority within their own party to renew the current tier system in January. I think they only got the tier system past their backbenchers this time by hinting at decoupling
