Care home staff and getting covid vaccination

pinkkoala · 14/12/2020 18:12

Hi, hope fully you can shed some light on this, have any care home staff on here had their vaccination yet and did you go about it, did you get given the vaccine at work or were you contacted by gp or hospital.
I have completed my consent form at work and have letter of employment confirmation to show but my manager doesnt seem to know anymore.
Do we make an appointment when it is convenient for us or do we get called up and told when we need to go.

It all seems to be in a mess as no one knows when it will happen where I work. The residents have signed there consent forms but nothing for staff as yet. So much for us to be priority.

pinkkoala · 14/12/2020 21:33

We have signed our forms but residents aren't getting theirs yet. Its crazy no oneknows, i am presuming we have to make an appointment when we aren't on shift.
Vivana, what area are you in, i am northants.

We get ours tomorrow - PH (Scotland) called on Friday to say they would be in on Tuesday to vaccinate. That was the first we had heard about it.

pinkkoala · 14/12/2020 22:52

Mrswildermac, its good you are getting yours tomorrow, are they coming in to your care home to staff and residents at same time.
Have you been told you need to have any photo id or any other id.

OP posts:
MrsWildermac · 15/12/2020 00:25

Yes, coming in to do both staff and residents in a v short window of time.

Hadn't thought about ID but will take some just in case and report back. We are a small home though and I guess our managers can vouch for us.

pinkkoala · 15/12/2020 08:05

Mrswildermac, hope today is ok, will be interested to know how you got on.
We are a large retirement village with independent living, assisted living and then the care floor/nursing floor, which is split between dementia and elderly frail and end of life, that is floor i am on. So not sure how they will vaccinate us staff. We have been told different things such as we need to go to our local main hospital or possibly one of the big gp surgeries will become a hub.

My sister works in a care home in England and is in the same position as you.

She was initially told she’d have to go to the local vaccination centre (sports club) to get it done, but when I spoke to her yesterday her manager seems to think they will be going into the home. She seems to think it’s happening quickly.

pinkkoala · 15/12/2020 09:52

I agree, we have gone from just having a chat, and being told we would hear more, then management giving us consent forms on friday, then we were having a hospital to now could be hub.
It all seems rushed and no one really knows.

You just have to wait to hear I'm afraid. You have been primed with paperwork etc, so you are ready to go. It is totally unreasonable to expect everyone, everywhere, to simultaneously get vaccinated on day one. DH's best friend is involved in the roll out, they have been working on it 24/7 since it's approval, it's not easy, be patient.
vodkaredbullgirl · 15/12/2020 10:11

We are still waiting for ours, forms are ready for signing. Work in a dementia care home and we need the residents families to sign them.

MrsWildermac · 15/12/2020 11:07

Vaccine done - no ID needed (in Scotland anyway), you are matched to your details on PMS system. Consent given on form prior to vaccine and verbal consent on day. Good uptake here - most residents and over half staff.

lazylockdowner · 15/12/2020 11:31

My sister works in a nursing home they have been issued 10 staff vac's.... they have 60 staff and none for the residents

pinkkoala · 15/12/2020 12:03

Mrswildermac, how are you feeling now you have had it done, any after effects, sore arm etc.
But i bet you are glad its done though.

OP posts:
MrsWildermac · 15/12/2020 15:06

@pinkkoala - slightly achy arm commensurate with having a needle stuck in it and a very slightly tingly face but that could be psychosomatic!

lalahotpants · 15/12/2020 17:12

I had mine on Friday, manager booked me in, had to go to hospital for it, consent form filled in on the day, also in Scotland

Hapixmas · 15/12/2020 17:33

My friend had hers Sunday.

LemonTT · 15/12/2020 17:45

Hospital trusts and gp practices will be inviting care home staff in this week. But not all trusts or Gp practices will be set up to provide vaccine. In one area the Trust may invite you, in another it’s the Gp practice. Only 70 trusts are vaccinating and only 200 odd GP sites.

However the various national NHS bodies have started to confirm how the vaccine can be safely moved to care homes. This means that vaccination teams will probably come out to the home and do as many staff and patients as they can in that visit. This was always how they wanted to do it. Hospitals and GP practices don’t have an easy means to contact care home staff. They know their own staff and have patient lists that mean that they easily call them in.

pinkkoala · 15/12/2020 20:38

Mrswildermac how are you now, hows your arm and face, any fever or headaches.
I was on shift today and our manager thinks she gets told when and where we need to go and we get a link to book it.
Lets hope so.

MrsWildermac · 15/12/2020 21:41

@pinkkoala - fine thanks. Arm/shoulder still stiff but no worse than any other vaccination. Face totally normal (was probably imagining that!). Definitely feel 'chilly' tonight and chills is a side effect. But could just be that it's very cold here!

pinkkoala · 15/12/2020 21:47

Mrswildermac did most of your staff and residents accept the vaccine, our place is about half and half with staff. Over the last few weeks we have had cases mostly staff picked up on weekly testing, i so want to know when we will get vaccine.
On another note have any other care staff been told about taking id.

OP posts:
MrsWildermac · 15/12/2020 23:01

@pinkkoala - I would say approx 60% of staff and 80% residents took it. Hard to know exactly though.

We've been v fortunate and hardly had any cases at all. Hoping this will help keep it that way.

pinkkoala · 16/12/2020 23:03

Mrs wildermac, how are you feeling today, hopefully all good.

I am even more confused now, email from employer regarding vsccine and appointments. I thought we booked our own when we were told to at a time that would be convenient to us as we have to go to local hospital or gp hub, but after reading the email it says the nhs work direct with employer to book vaccines. Surely they can't just book them for us, how do they no we don't have other plans, school runs etc and children.
How have you all had yours.

ilovebagpuss · 17/12/2020 18:35

We have had to register online England Care Home. We have been told they are prioritising some homes nearer to the hospital for practical reasons I’m sure. No word on anyone coming into the homes to do the residents yet.
Obvious they only have so much and it’s a huge task so I don’t think we will see it until some point in Jan/Feb

pinkkoala · 17/12/2020 19:19

Ilovebagpuss, thanks for the reply, so the msnager of the home books the appointments for staff.
Or do they get told staff can book then we book our own.
