How long did it take to recover from COVID?

DD tested positive for COVID last week, just thought it would be interesting to find out how long it took for people to feel better and the journey. Have you had any lingering issues?

My 30 year old stepnsister had it right at the start of September. Unwell at home with a temperature for about 4 days but is still I'll with a cough, chest and mild cognitive problems.
My late 70s neighbour had it start of November and was backout walkingbher dog 2 weeks later. She's out side now.pruning some hedge. Seems right as rain.

I think it affects everyone differently. I was lucky and had quite a mild case, cough and body aches. I’m 4 weeks on but if I over exert myself i have to rest for a couple of hours. Also on cold days my cough can come back and slight feeling of pressure on chest. I am 42, no underlying health issues.

A family member in late 40s, asthmatic, hasn’t returned to work yet after 2 months of testing positive.

Adult children and teenager only ever got a sore throat for couple of days.

Myself and husband unwell for about 5 days. I needed one day in bed. He didn't need too. I lost my sense of smell and taste for about 4 months though. That was a weird time.

8 year old got unwell for few days then seemed ok. About a week later a terrible cough started and got worse and worse. He needed an inhaler to ease it. Didn't use one before then. He was well in himself though. After about a month he no longer needed the inhaler.

I am three weeks on if I do any more than pottering round the house or a quick stroll in the park the coughing fits and dull headache come back and I have to rest in bed ( still spending some of the day in bed anyway) 50s no underlying health conditions usually work do lots of fitness (obviously nothing now!). DH is mid 40s back at work in a hospital and playing tennis again the virus hits everyone differently

My friend (52) had it, felt crook for about 4 days and was then fine albeit tired. He didn't really have the cough though either, just a temp which triggered his test.

Athinginitself · 13/12/2020 15:46

Really varies. I am still having issues now and was unwell in march, partner unwell at the same time and was v mildly unwell with no lasting problems.

Shopaholic100 · 13/12/2020 15:58

For those who recovered without any lasting issues, was there anything you did which you feel helped your recovery?

The virus really does seem to affect people randomly.

We are all naturally outside and active people apart from my 8 year old that would stay home all the time if I let him. As he was hit worst I do really believe vitamin D helps how it affects people.

I had it about 6 weeks ago, only had it mild, was okay after a week but just this week I have had a set back, lungs and chest feel heavy. I don't know if I went back to work too soon or over done it Sad

The best thing I did was had an extra week off sick from work, once the ten days were up. I could've just about gone back - and ordinarily I would have-but I was still exhausted. I spent that week being really lazy and it did me the world of good. Been back to work 3 weeks now and so far, doing fine. Am early 40s.

My husband was ill for a week then back to work and exercise. I was off work for 4 weeks but then continued to have chest pain and shortness of breath for months. All better now though still can't do much aerobic exercise yet. I'm 8 months on.

CarinaMarina · 13/12/2020 17:30

I'm aged 48, BMI of 36 so not especially fit but otherwise well and not prone to illness or regular colds etc.

I was ill but soldiering on (wfh and walking the dog) for 5 days, followed by being utterly wiped out and horribly unwell in bed for 6 days. I was up and weak/faint on day 12, went back to work (and walking the dog for short distances) feeling muzzy headed and exhausted on day 16, but suddenly felt normal on day 21.

It's now three weeks on and I've been fine save the occasional tight chest and cough, although I did inexplicably start coughing badly again yesterday where I hadn't been coughing much at all previously. I think it was a one off, it's been better again today although I do have a slightly sore chest.

Caramel81 · 13/12/2020 17:34

I haven’t had it but my best friend and her husband tested positive a month ago. They felt like they had a bad viral type thing for a week (not bad enough to be completely bed ridden but bad enough to feel like crap and spend their days on the sofa barely moving).
A week later and she said their symptoms had gone other than an overwhelming fatigue. A month later and they still have the fatigue which is making work incredibly difficult as they can barely keep their eyes open. They keep getting bad headaches on and off too which they didn’t suffer with before. The cough and breathlessness have gone though.

elp30 · 13/12/2020 18:19

Husband is on Day 8.

He started with a temperature, headaches and later a cough that lasted for four days.
I have had to wake him up to eat and drink water because he will sleep from 9pm until 2pm for the past few days.

When he is awake, he is okay and can talk and laugh and what have you but it takes him a great deal of effort to do anything physical and gets a bit out of breath so he'll spend most of his time awake sitting on the couch.

So, apart from a temperature, cough and breathlessness, he's pretty much the same. Lol

WhyNotMeThough · 13/12/2020 19:34

I'm about to enter week 4. I'm dizzy when I breathe through my nose. Also really tight chest and can't think straight.
Anyone else had this?

movingonup20 · 13/12/2020 19:46

About 2 hours perhaps 3, by the time it came to the next time I would take paracetamol my fever had disappeared, but the next day my taste and smell disappeared and didn't return for 10 days.

IHeartNiles · 13/12/2020 23:22

We’re old gimmers (nearly 50) and were fine. DH had aches and pains and mild fever one night, fine the next day. A week later I had 2 days fatigue and had to go to bed early, dry red eyes, felt a bit ‘off’. A week later I felt short of breath walking up the hill and my smell wasn’t as good. All resolved quickly. Positive blood antibodies. Loads of people at work have caught it and vast majority had mild symptoms. All the horror stories you read on here don’t seem to fit with the low % of complications in the normal population.
