Tiers and hospitality (England)

Can anyone tell me if there’s a difference in terms of financial support for hospitality in Tier 3? Would some be better off closing in Tier 2?

Also the pubs and restaurants in Tier 2 that didn’t reopen, is that partly due to being better under furlough?

Thank you.

I don’t know for sure, but when Tiers were first introduced it was suggested that our council were pushing to be in 3 because of the better financial assistance. Hence where I live being in Tier 3 despite having very low rates.

This is what I thought and why Andy Burnham went for it.

But so many London restaurants are closed and I’m wondering if they are also getting assistance in spite of us being in Tier 2.

I’d like to be very clear that I have no judgement on this. I just wondered what packages were available and how much they vary between tiers.

Possibly that might be the case but not getting as much? Some of the pubs here have been doing takeaway but the nearest one has stopped as I guess it’s not really worth their while.

Yes, it’s really difficult for wet led places.

what the place I went today has just decided it isn’t worth bothering to open Monday and Tuesday.

Even if we stay in tier 2, there’s no business because of household mixing rules.

For the last lockdown there was a grant up to 3k for the month, dependant on business rates you pay.

We are waiting for confirmation if support will be ongoing for level 2 since lockdown was lifted and tiers reintroduced - our local council is still waiting to hear from government.

So right now if people are closed in level 2 that’s because the business is just not viable to open with the restrictions in place currently, but they are choosing to do this with no government grants confirmed yet.

We have gone from a business that easily turns over half a million a year, to one that this year has turned over 150k this year.
Obviously a loss through direct lockdowns, but with every increase in restrictions we have seen a drop in trade.

We have had to make the decision today to drop 3 days a week trading, as we loose to much by opening these days, we will still be loosing by being closed, but loosing less.

But it’s a hard decision to weight up, we still need to keep all of our cellar equipment on for the whole week, our fridges and freezers, etc etc, still need to pay rent, FOT fees.

But means we save slightly by not having a chef in, a kitchen on, heating and lighting.

Highly unlikely that furlough is making owners and leaseholders say closed, even if they are eligible for it.

Just means they are most likely loosing less by being shut completely/partly than opening.

Squats thank you.

I’m sorry you’re in this position.

Yes, that’s what I was also thinking, that they lose less in being closed.

Do you mind if I ask, do you think T&T has an effect? I’ve just been to a restaurant for the first time since it became compulsory to leave details. I don’t want to repeat that as getting caught in the net is too big a worry.

Thanks for you kind thoughts, it’s crappy, but people have had worse things happen with this and other things in life, we just have to put our heads down and get through it- whatever it is for us.

We have taken info for T&T since re opening after first lockdown.
We have not had to pass over any of the info to date so I do not have direct experience.

I understand why people are not coming the different restrictions impact people’s willingness and wanting to come in different ways.
I can understand how you feel about T&T, and a meal and drink not being worth isolating, possible loss of income etc etc.

Squats it’s interesting isn’t it

I would have thought most people would understand it, yet Birmingham city council have come up with this

Will there be takers for being tested to go out for dinner? I suppose it depends how far government wants to go.
