Am I missing something? Hairdressers open, restaurants closed?!

Name change for this (I will probably get bashed for this)

I had a baby 8 weeks ago so I’ve been pretty much isolating during my whole pregnancy.

Today was the first time I’ve been to the hairdressers since giving birth (and since before pregnancy)

I have to be honest and say it did feel safe.
Temperature check on arrival, asked to sanitise hands on the way in and out.
Seats were wiped before and after I sat down.

The girl that washed my hair wore a mask and visor.

The hairdressers though only wore masks, this surprised me considering the close contact.
I was happy with that as I also had my mask on.

But what I don’t understand is why being in close contact with a hair dressers is allowed, yet so many of our lovely local restaurants are closed?

The hairdressers were both their usual chatty selves. There were 2 other clients in (we were all 2m apart, and they were chatting to their stylists.

It just really surprised me. With the exception of the measures in place, it all just seemed really normal.

Our local Italian that we visit recently is a small quaint restaurant, we went when it was reopened and we had little contact with the staff.

It just seems so unfair that they have to close when hairdressers can stay open.

@autumndream

All hairdressers must be in a medical grade 2 AND either a visor or goggles
@autumndream

Hmm that’s interesting.

The hair dressers in the salon only had masks on.

So many aren't wearing the correct ppe (I'm a hairdresser) 🙄

I wonder if they actually know?

The girl washing my hair had mask and visor. The two stylists didn’t.

The lady that cuts my hair is around 60, she was telling me she’s being very careful as a lot of her clients are elderly. Confused

They shouldn't be working if they don't know, the guidelines are extremely clear

islockdownoveryet · 11/12/2020 19:34

Agreed absolute nonsense, I also think it'll be interesting to see if London does go into tier 3 next week .
Restaurants are perfectly safe if following the guidelines. If you tell me that is not safe to go to a local restaurant but it's safe to go to the hairdresser or local supermarket absolute rubbish.
I feel so sorry for the hospitality industry they have been one of the most hit industries, they have followed the guidelines but still they are having to close .

Goggles where do you get that from ? I've not seen anyone wear goggles . Mask and visor yes but goggles what the bloody hell are goggles?

Everyone at the hairdressers wears masks. They don’t in restaurants. As others have said the virus travels further than 2m and aerosol transmission does occur. The longer you stay in a room without a mask the greater the risk you will inhale sufficient virus.
The other big difference is household mixing in restaurants. It’s very difficult for them to police this and there were a lot of people breaking the rules.
I think the hairdressers is still a risk if there for two hours getting highlights etc but the risk is less than restaurants so it’s a trade off of keeping some businesses open.

autumndream · 11/12/2020 19:38

Not swimming goggles 🤣 like ones workmen would wear

notevenat20 · 11/12/2020 19:40

It turns out you can infect people quite a long way away in a restaurant. The key problem is if you are facing them and there is air flow between the two of you.

Daisywashername · 11/12/2020 19:43

Just asked my friend and her hairdresser didn’t wear a visor either (completely different salon)

No wonder we keep getting shut down when people can't follow basic instructions! No one likes wearing all this stuff but if it means we stay open and can work then so be it.

autumndream · 11/12/2020 19:48

Hairdressers can't use the exempt reason either, if they can't wear the ppe then they can't work

How are we many open If they aren’t following rules. 🤦🏻‍♀️

No idea! I guess no one is challenging them because they want their hair done. I

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/12/2020 19:54

I’m in Scotland so possibly different, but hairdressers only wear masks here, clients too. Cutting areas and washing areas have been spaced out in my salon, plus Perspex screen things between chairs. Everything gets wiped down between clients.

@autumndream

Personally, I didn’t know they had to wear them.

I know at one point they were wearing visors without masks, which I would feel less safe with.

I was happy with masks being worn. But if a known visors were a legal requirement too then I would’ve questioned that.

In the beginning it was just visor and the client didn't have to wear anything but now it's the mask + visor/goggles and client should wear a mask. But this is for England I don't know the rules for Scotland/Wales so I haven't taken into consideration you might not be England

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/12/2020 19:59

I just looked at Scotland out of nosiness and it is just masks:

www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-retail-sector-guidance/pages/close-contact-services-questions-and-answers/

That was updated on Thursday.

Restaurants and Hairdressers open here( Tier 2.) Havent been to either .Cut/colour own hair anyway . DH birthday and had take out .

loulouljh · 11/12/2020 20:26

there is no science...its completely arbitrary...

Aprilrainbow · 11/12/2020 20:51

All the old ladies have to have their hair done for Christmas!

HidingInTheLight · 11/12/2020 21:02

I thought part of the logic of hairdressers being open is it gives people access to having their hair washed? A friend had to start washing several neighbours hair during lockdown (she lives in sheltered housing) because they couldn’t do it themselves and were missing the weekly trip to the hairdresser.
